What Randell said. For those of us who choose to remain child free, there are plenty of people in the U.S. who decide to have 10-18 children. I don't think humanity will end by us not having children.

I was speaking to a young scholar the other day. The growing number of people choosing not to have children is growing, and is being discussed in college textbooks as we speak.

Having said that, I have nothing against children. I respect those brave enough to have them.

I know a bunch of people who don't have kids. In some cases I've had the suspicion that they just didn't want to have any kids but felt like that was somehow an unacceptable thing to say/do and so they have these stories about why they don't have kids. Sometimes it's a fertility story, sometimes a money story, etc. It seems like they feel guilty about their decision or they worry what others will think if they just say "I never really wanted kids." There's nothing wrong with not wanting kids.

Because this is the Complaint Department I need to give this topic a twist. The opposite is people who go out and create a pile of kids and then don't take care of them. While this is especially true of guys (who get women pregnant and then just walk away from the woman and the child) it's also true of couples who just keep cranking out kids even though they're unemployed, etc. They just expect you and me to take care of them and their kids through welfare, Medicaid, and other entitlements. I'm getting pretty tired of that.

    I'm so pissed.

I know I’m not the first one to post this… I’m sick and tired of lazy professors that really don’t care about teaching. I’m taking a course (wont say the school) where we are supposed to “intelligently” discuss about the week’s topic. At the beginning he stressed that only comments contributing to the discussion would be “counted” as participation but most of the posts (roughly 70% is my guestimate) are: “I agree”, “Nice perspective”, etc. However, at the time of giving the grades if you filled the minimum 4 posts quota you got your grade. I travel abroad at least 3-4 times per month and sometimes (2-3 times per year) I’m stuck in a place where the Internet connection is so bad (or simply doesn’t work). This happened to me last week so I wasn’t able to do the minimum number of posts. Of course I was trying to contribute to the discussion making reference to the texts and other sources… I was penalized because I didn’t meet the weekly quota but someone making three comments about her cat and two “I like your position” got full credits.

    Now I feel better.

Just curious, how do you know they got full credit?

The brilliant professor posted the class participation grades on the bulletin board...

Is it a US college? Because that could be illegal (FERPA).

    * I'm tired of dealing with graduate students who can't follow a simple set of directions.
    * I'm tired of having graduate students (who are teachers, by the way) blatantly plagiarizing & denying it. Way to bring down our profession, people. Grrr....
    * I'm tired of graduate students (who are teachers, BY THE WAY) who can't make their subjects & verbs agree. I'm glad you're not teaching my child.

And that's my grumbling for the day. Carry on!
