I can't help it. I'm a Democrat and therefore an outsider but I keep thinking Pence would have a better chance against Biden than DeSantis (would?) have and a much better chance than Trump (will?) have. Pence is very conservative but he isn't completely nuts.

Pence had dignity and integrity standing up to Democrats pressuring him and Trump (both wanted a coup). The problem for him is he is seen as a traitor by pro Trumpistas. They hate him. Despise him.

DeSantis has the pro Trump forces and other conservatives. Stood up for issues and is a veteran. Can get some mileage.

Pence would probably be a good President and decent human being. In a tough situation of historic proportions, he tried to do the right thing.

I agree that Pence may have a better chance in the general election. Pence's problem is that I don't see how he can win the nomination. Too many in the Republican base have apparently bought into Trump's lies about Pence being a traitor.

First, a President who preached Ivermectin and Bleach.
Next, one who thinks Gays can (and should) be "cured?"

I'm glad I can't vote in the US. No way could I live with the results.

Um...sorry? How did the Democrats want a coup? And what pressure did Democrats put on Pence?

Pence will not be the nominee. Trump might go away (he might not), but his devotees will not. They’ll want someone to lead them. That, today, looks like DeSantis. But 2024 is a long way off and many things can happen.

Pence is conservative and a sane person. (far from nuts :))
Its to early for 2024 GOP nominees but some educated speculations can be made.
Like in any political competitions, there will be the usual attacks by media, smear campaigns etc etc to damage the opponents chances, it depends on how strong the future candidate is.
Its also can be seen that Mike Pence become a tool for Democrats.
He has been criticized for some sayings that I don't disagree with what he said, but in GOP it seems like he is helping the Democrats and very inarticulate in the way that he attacked his own party.

Pence's challenge is he must convince a lot of people who wanted him killed to vote for him.

I didn't count and have no knowledge of such persons, but I think the # of such persons is negligent and has no real following or can affect elections.

That's because you weren't at the Capitol, Jan 6th, Lerner. Neither was I, but the Trumpistas there were shouting "Hang Mike Pence!" And he was branded a "traitor" at a Conservative Christian Summit. You don't want to mess with those folks -and there's ... what? Maybe 60 million of 'em? Here's an article from Forbes. https://www.forbes.com/sites/andrewsolender/2021/06/18/traitor-pence-faces-hecklers-during-conservative-christian-summit/?sh=6ad774797d98

Please have a good look at the "background" section. Most informative. That's the thing. In the US, people talk like that -- and if they see a chance, sometimes they'll go out and actually DO it! Scary!

It is scary, but grossly exaggerated.
There are people who can take it to extreme on all sides. There are lunatics on all sides.
Trumpistas were shouting"Hang Mike Pence! no one’s really saying that, when I say no one I mean, no person of following and to my knowledge no statewide elected official in the entire Republican Party. Conservatives, as people believe in law and order, not just as some general principle, they want people to be safe, and want us all to be obeying the same rules and laws ’cause it makes us a better society, I think Democrats also want the same.

Just the last couple of months someone showed up at Brett Kavanaugh’s house trying to assassinate him.
Who shared widely all of the addresses of conservative Supreme Court justices and said, go show up outside of their homes and scream and yell and protest?
Not so long ago we had lunatics burning down police precincts.
They had anti Trump terrorizing not in rhetorical terms, but the neighborhood in a presidential election year most stores were destroyed and vandalized.

I remember in 2010 on radio in LA there was a talk show and they were demanding "Heads on the Stick", the hosts would "expose" politicians GOP or Dem etc in the state of CA,
and demand their resignation or removal, legally or affect re-election prospects.
It wasn't literal call to kill people and place their heads on a stick.

    The rising crime is scary

Philadelphia setting the worst crime, murder streak in the history of that city.
And there are many people out there live in Phoenix, Denver, NY, Chicago, LA or whether you live in Houston or if you’re up in Milwaukee, you don’t feel safe.
And that is the reality from coast to coast, top to bottom in the United States.

One of the huge changes in downtown in San Francisco, Cleveland, Portland — one of the huge changes in recent years largely because some had poor planning that made a shift in peoples thinking about law enforcement for many years now, was that cops no longer knew or could no longer believe reasonably that in a close call situation the system of the city would have their back.

Most Trumpistas are not "people of following" or "elected officials." And they are certainly not "no one." They are simply people who favour Donald Trump and would likely vote for him. Some would commit violence if it would help their cause. And they are not "no one." They are numerous. Very numerous - whether you like it, or I like it, - or we don't. If I were Mike Pence, I'd be sure to be well-guarded and very careful.

I don't like the man - but I've no wish to see him dead or injured. No matter what, I hope he's safe.

Overall, crime is way down from two decades ago. But crime scares people, and one party absolutely needs that.

There’s a huge game of distraction that some play in all these cities,
San Francisco, New York City, Washington, D.C, Portland — and it’s that, if that actually enforce the law more, things will get better.

Probably some others would too. I have no horse in the race, but he may be the least of the evils on his side, by a good bit. If You want a Republican, and Pence runs, I'm happy if you vote for him. It's your country -- and there are certainly worse choices. If he gets the nod - good for him.

He's not. But none of those who are better are any less unlikely to get the Republican nomination.

"Aww, Mike -- please stop crying. Yes, SOMEBODY likes you. Nice fella - his name is Lerner. I'll introduce you - you and he could be friends. C'mon, cheer up, no more tears, it's gonna be OK... :) "

To be clear, I was thinking only about Pence's chances in the 2024 general election and not his fitness for office. Biden is beatable but apparently not by Trump and probably not by DeSantis or other Trump substitutes. I will be interested to see whether the GOP's ongoing Trump loyalty will overcome their natural desire to actually win the election.

There are four"GOPs." There's Establishment Republicans, and we know what's happening to them. Then there are the ones going along with TFG so as not to lose the base, even though they'd rather not. Then there are a few that actually own this stuff. Finally, there are hoi polloi, the voters, and we know where they stand and what they want, which is why Liz is headed towards unemployment, Ron is pretending to be a fascist, and MTG and a few others ARE fascists. Because the hoi polloi want a certain entitlement protected at all costs. All. Costs.
