And to be frank, Bill, up to this moment I've been grilled because somebody has mistaken me for having a fake degree from Berne and because I spoke against somebody who wanted somebody to do his/her dirty work on his/her thesis.

I didn't start talking about degrees. I was provoked. [/B][/QUOTE]

I'm sorry , I may have misread, but Me Again wasn't looking for that, was he? And, Rich agreed with you on that particular point, didn't he?

I know Rich has been provoked here too. The thing of it is, perhaps everyone needs to get passed personal issues because the truth about higher ed is so broad and multifaceted that we really have other things that need attention. Seekers of info don't come here to see us in sincere argument.

And I'll tell you another of my opinions too: It is quite within the realm of possibility that an effective educator or one skilled in another discipline could be the graduate of an unaccredited school..or have no schooling at all. I believe to a large measure the man or woman "makes" the degree. Utility, of course, may be another matter. I don't think a degree makes the man or woman effective necessarily. In 35 years of teaching public school, I only met two school psycs who were not bird brains! Learning can occur in various modes and places, even in solitary. But in my field (theology) it's a whole lot easier to be under the discipline of a school's regimen.

Oh well, guess I just hope we can all get along! Now excuse me so I can focus on getting off my pedestal, trifocals, you know:rolleyes:

Lesser than that of Union, wwhich is lesser than most other US doctorates, that is, until your publication changes the global perception of it - for surely it must be on the reading list of every educational academic, teacher, administrator?

But I jest ... Berne wouldn't get a birth out here, but then neither do others. I would defer to the opinion of our leanerd specialist in Australia, George Brown

I passed my undergraduate and graduate statistics classes with flying colors. What gives you the impression that I did otherwise?

My questions about statistics were geared towards doctoral work and not towards masters work. For being an alledged "doctor," you're reading comprehension is severely lacking.

Is your "doctorate" from an RA school?

Thanks, Bill, for treating me like a human being. As you know, I've been after by 3 posters. The first thinks I have a fake degree from Berne, the second thinks I ami using a fake name, and the third suggests that I shut up and not press emotional buttons despite having been addressed as a degree-mill shill with a fake name. And of course, that meant I wasn't supposed to inquire about Mr. Douglas intellectual contributions either; but only he could ask me where I earned my degrees.

Don't kid yourself. You have posted elsewhere about your problems with stats, and your questions indicated your lack of knowledge in fundamental stats.

So I plan to forward your prior cries for help to the University of South Florida. So, Mr. Again, can I have you name?? Or are you just a "phony" like me? :D

When you hear from U of S, then you'll know if I'm a real doctor or not. So, what's your real name, Me?

Do you think the university will resind my past good grades, based upon your allegation?

And you're going to tell them that exactly who was having problems with their stats courses? Me again? Uhmmm, who again? You again? No!!! Me again!!!

You're never worked with counter-intelligence, have you? ;)

Re: Re: “Contracting Out” Statistical Analysis of Dissertation

It seems to me that a lot of things are being assumed here, including:

That the statistical analysis in question was crucial in generating the paper's results, and was not just illustrative or preparatory, providing raw materials for subsequent (perhaps not statistical) analysis and interpretation.

That the field in question is one in which facility with statistics is expected. I'm more familiar with humanities fields in which statistics is never even touched. I can imagine cases in which it might be useful, but I don't think anyone would expect a student to be expert in it. (Although if they included some statistics, I imagine that they would have to be able to explain what it's doing there.)

Even when some knowledge of statistics is expected, are all graduates expected to have professional-grade skills in this area? Isn't that why professional statisticians exist? Might there be cases in which one would want to employ the best possible procedures, even if they are somthing best left to specialists?

Then there's the larger issue of dissertations and theses arising from collaborative research projects. I'm thinking of things like "big-science" physics projects here. Even if each doctoral student has his or her own individual sub-project, I'm sure that they collaborate and make use each others' work (with attribution, of course).

In the sciences, technicians are often employed to construct experimental apparatus, to maintain and operate it, to operate instruments and computers that embody a lot of analysis in their very construction.

OK, my point with these examples is that this may be a gray area. Whether or not getting statistical help is kosher probably depends on the precise individual situation.

If it were me, my instinct would be to talk it over very carefully with my own advisor and make sure that I had approvals for anything I did.

    Bill, I initially wrote:

"Pardon my ignorance, but the notion of "contracting out the statistical analysis portion" of a thesis is certainly new to me.

I do not expect all graduate students to do "proofs" on statistical equations, but I cannot imagine anyone in a Masters program not having the ability to understand the fundamentals of stats, and to apply them to the collected data."

    No, I'm not a phoney like you. ;) :)

I have had several "internet crazies" who have threatened to:
    • Contact my employer to... (I can only speculate)
    • Contact my pastor to expose my alledged heresies.
    • One threat to kill me when I said I thought that the second amendment should be resinded or interpreted to prohibit Americans from owning semi-automatic guns (flint locks are okay because they were in existence during the time the second amendment was written)
Yessir, I've met my share of "the crazies" on the internet and, frankly, I enjoy privacy.

And why don't you register with a legitimate name? :)

Well, thank you. Respect my privacy as well as to where I earned my degrees.

My name is legitimate (at least it sounds legitimate). Incidentally, why don't you register with a legitimate-sounding name?

Can you provide some sound proof as to why my name is not legitimate? If you can, I'll consider not reporting your crap to the University of South Florida, Art.

    Money vs. Personal Enrichment

I keep waffling about whether or not to pursue a doctorate, so that is probably not a good sign. Do I go for the money or for the doctorate? One will gain me great wealth while the other will give me personal enrichment. And who can place a value on the ”personal enrichment” that is obtained from the pursuit of higher educational endeavors? Isn't it priceless?

    :)

If I choose to enrich myself through the pursuit of a doctorate, then I haven’t decided exactly how to handle the statistical analysis portion of the program. That’s why my ears burn whenever anyone talks about how they did it. ;)

But I’m sure that the university will adequately prepare me for whatever it is that they will be looking for in the comprehensive and in the dissertation. :)

    Who is this guy ?

Can you at least state whether your doctorate is cheesey or is RA?

If you were to report my postings to my professors, they would look at you like a deer in headlights. :D

They would think, "Who is this guy?" :D

And you know it's true. LOL :)

Actually, you're right in the sense that there are several crazies here. I remember reading one thread which talked about how a contributing member telephoned the employer of a teacher with an unaccredited PhD only to inquire if the degree's listing in the school catalog was appropriate. :D

I certainly understand what you're saying.

Actually, you're right in the sense that your university will adequately prepare you for whatever they're looking for. Keep in mind though, many graduate students in traditional schools are selected based on their overall GPA and grades on certain courses. Stats is often one of them; you'll always need it when you're doing research.

When one enters an RA graduate school that will take your money and accept you based on easy entrance requirements, you'll be screwed somewhere down the road. Posting 1000 times on this board won't get you much help either. I've read posts in which some who tested out and got their Excelsior degrees in psychology have significant problems writing decent research paper and some don't even know what the heck APA documentation is.

It seems to me as if Degreeinfo has contracted a case of the trolls.

I guess its time for me to add to my ignore list, and hope that if these gratuitous attacks on Degreeinfo participants continue the moderators will take action to eliminate the perpetrators.
