RA For University of the People

maybe she’s already racked up too much debt. Or she has a friend there….
I find it amusing that they add “… in California”.

 

At a certain point your career and legitimacy might not depend on the accreditation of your next degree (as long as that degree isn't actively disreputable).

 

My guess is she was searching for free MBA's and that was the only thing that came up as a legitimate degree and the least expensive. It's not like she needs it at this point.

 

Any word on how UoP is doing with their RA quest?

 

They are in the Candidacy phase, since June 2021. This is not Accreditation, nor does it guarantee that Accreditation will occur. I believe the maximum candidacy period is five years. I see no info re: forthcoming site visits etc. This info mostly from here:

"UoPeople’s first accreditation visit was in 2021, after which it was granted candidacy for accreditation. The board visited for the second time in the fall of 2022 and met last month. (Feb. 2023, - J.) A decision of that review is expected this month. The accrediting board could approve the request, require a third seeking-accreditation visit or end its candidacy."

So, there WAS a second site visit, Fall of 2022. And seeing no news of accreditation approval or end to candidacy, I'm guessing we're waiting -- for another site visit (the third). Hard to get anything current on this. Anybody have info post Mar. 2023?

 

The next 'Seeking Accreditation Visit' is due in the Fall of 2024.

I believe that a high percentage of candidates eventually receive full accreditation status. Anyone know the approximate percentages?

 

Couldn't find it, Bill. But it must be high -- by the definition of Candidate status. According to what I read Candidate Status is only granted when an institution "has demonstrated that it meets all, or nearly all, of the Standards of Accreditation at a minimum level and has a clear plan to meet the Standards at a substantial level of compliance for Accreditation. Candidacy is limited to four years and is granted only when an institution can demonstrate that it is likely to become accredited during the four year period.

Not a slam-dunk, but a well-considered bet. Maybe betting should be allowed on accreditations.

 

It's close to 100%. Candidacy means "we think you're worthy of accreditation, so we'll watch you for awhile to be sure." It's really unusual to see a school not advance. Prometheus College was an RA candidate and just disappeared from the map. Union had its candidacy pulled (over money, naturally) before getting it restored. I can't even think of a third example off-hand. Oh, wait, I believe the International Graduate School failed to advance from candidacy before going out of business. Others? I can't recall any, but I suspect there's more.

Not so sure that's connected. Prometheus College in Tacoma was gone by 1979.

That domain is hosted by Go Daddy. It is registered by a proxy, so I can't tell who owns it. I think it was created just a few months ago.

The State of Washington lists Prometheus College as "closed." It houses the school's records and still issues transcripts from it.
