I'm not usually an alarmist about these things but don't the recent developments in Yemen constitute a quantum leap in the escalating warfare in the Middle East?

I would not describe the Yemen situation as a quantum leap at this time. Rather it is another situation where one country (Saudi Arabia) is attempting to avoid chaos on its borders by trying to make sure its allies maintain control. I think this type of fighting will continue for many years to come both in the Middle East and elsewhere around the world.

As with many countries around the world a large part of Yemen was a British Colony (Aden) until the 1960s until the Brits eventually kicked out by "freedom fighters" after a lot of fighting including airstrikes. Aden was a refeuling point for ships trans-versing the Suez Canal.

No. Yemen has been on the brink of civil war for a while. The Saudi-led coalition is basically protecting Saudi's southern border before the chaos spills out of the country.

I'm with the no vote. I mean, to give you an idea of what a total flustercuck Yemen is, in Wikipedia when you put in Yemeni Civil War it takes you a page that essentially asks, "Which one?"

    Well, the article itself says:

Besides, the House of Saud and the Iranian Ayatollahs have been rivals for power in the region for decades, and I don't see a compelling reason to prefer either of those despicable regimes.

And then there's the little matter of the Americans fighting with the Iranians against ISIS, but simultaneously against the Iranians by supporting the Saudis in Yemen. I'm not usually a Daily Show fan, but Jon Stewart's comment on that situation is perfect: "We did it! It took decades of destabilizing conflict, but we finally figured out how to fight a proxy war against ourselves!"
