When 22-year-old Adam Klawitter graduates from University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point on May 20, he will complete a most improbable journey.

The dual-major senior started this journey by using Modern States’ online courses, which prepared him to earn free college credit.

“People who are curious and driven can go to Modern States and get college credits for free,” he said. “I tell everyone about it.”

While most students complete one course at a time, Adam completed five Modern States courses before taking any exams.

The reason: the closest place he could test was over 1,000 miles away in Montana.

In full support of Adam’s success, his family purchased a van, packed up and embarked on a trip towards free college credit. Adam passed every CLEP exam he took over the course of two days.

“It’s incredible how easy and accessible it is to get your credits,” Adam said. “It still amazes me.”

Yup, this was covered back in 2020: https://modernstates.org/news/what-lengths-would-you-go-to-for-free-college-credit/

1000 miles / 24 MPG = ~50 gallons of gas. 100 gallons for round-trip. I think gas prices were slightly lower when he took his exams, but that'd be about $300 in gas. Plus supplies for the trip, etc. His "free" credits cost more than SDC credits. But I think his school only accepts CLEP and not ACE. Sad.

    There's also this:
Add in the cost of the van and the cost-per-credit goes into orbit! Oh well, at least the van outlasted the trip and the family got much further use out of it. (We hope.)

The only way to make this more expensive would have been to move and buy a house close to the CLEP test center!

Tell folks something is free - and they'll do practically anything to get it.

This was a special situation due to covid. At one point, there were only, like, 5 CLEP testing centers in the entire USA that were still operational. I'm sure that there are plenty of centers in Wisconsin and the states in between, they simply weren't open at the time.

Now that make sense! They could always provide the test online likes others. CLEP is not easy to cheat because the material contents are so much and there is limited time in the exam.

That wasn't my experience at the Northern Virginia campus from 2003-06.

It is online now, but wasn't available online until late 2021 at least. They really didn't want it to be online. Still can't take it if you're not in the US.
