    Big drum roll . . .

No big return here, although I did enjoy reading this thread. In fact, I’ve been checking in occasionally over the years and am amused by how often my name has come up, even though I officially left the distance ed field almost 20 years ago. (I’ve been an over-the-road driver for 17 years now, and it’s a change I’ve never regretted. Far less boring than teaching or writing books.)

    A few quick comments, for what they’re worth . . .

First, I never said anything about a tenure-track position. In fact, I never sought a tenure-track position, and probably would have left higher education much earlier than I did if I had been teaching full-time, tenured or not. It’s an ADD thingey.

As for hanging out at DD rather than DI over the years, that was to maintain minimal contact with trends in the field. I simply opted for DD because I didn’t want to spread myself too thin over the various forums, and liked the philosophy with which Gus was running DD. Gus had also been a key player behind the scenes during the MIGS affair and is an all-around good guy.

It was coincidental that I moved over to DD around the time of the great DI controversy, but that was not the cause of my move. In fact, I’ve known Chip for many years and felt that he handled “the issue” in a forthright and up-front manner from the get-go. He’s also one of the funniest and brightest guys I’ve ever met in the field of distance education.

As for “constant fights,” I like to think that they were primarily with degree mill operators and apologists. Nonetheless, there will always be degree mills, regardless of who attempts to fight them. I figure, in short, that I’ve paid my dues in this field. (Therefore, please don’t start sending me PM’s with questions – I will not answer them. I am retired from distance and higher education.)

As for my absence from DI, I had a computer stolen several years ago and simply haven’t had my DI password. After reading this thread, however, I finally dropped a note to Chip and had a new password issued. Nonetheless, don’t expect me to make many posts; I’m simply involved with other things these days that take a higher priority. Over the years, I’ve said everything I have to say with regard to higher education, and can’t be bothered with new posters who are too lazy to do their own research. Think Ecclesiastes – “There is nothing new under the sun,” and almost all of the questions that are asked on distance education forums have been answered ad infinitum, ad nauseam over the years.

All that said, I send everyone my best, and I will be watching over you. Occasionally laughing, occasionally rolling my eyes, and perhaps occasionally sending out a zinger or two.

And, for what it’s worth, yeah – I’m still “RA or the highway.” Got a problem with that? Good – discuss among yourselves. :argue:

--and he's got lots of both! Many happy miles to you, Dr. Steve. As the Romani folks say, "latcho drom" - safe road. Good to hear from you!

Now if he can bring back DesElms my reunion fantansies will be complete. I'd like to hear more about the truck driving life, sounds appealing although I could not do it myself...I like the freedom aspect of it (if that is even an aspect of it).

That other forum where they hate on Dinfo is....um.....interesting.

I believe Gregg doesn't post in DL fora either, but he's not hard to find. He freely gives out his contact info here:

User:Deselms - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    He maintains a website here:

    www.greggdeselms.com

Gregg is on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn etc. and you can find him on non-DL blogs and forums. I've never had any discussions with Gregg; I think he quit DL forums about the time I got interested in them, which was roughly 2006. Maybe he quit before that; I'm not sure.

Deselms made a brief resurgence around 3 years ago under another username, Duces Tecum. His use of dual accounts violated our TOS, so Duces Tecum was banned and Deselms was extended a friendly invitation to return under his original username, which he never accepted.
