    Hille,

I have never heard of that. I think Dr. Esselen can better inform on that one. I thought, and I could be wrong, that IACI was a conduit between North America and UNISA. A go between or agent of UNISA in North America. That is what I thought. Again, I think Dr. Esselen would be able to answer this one.

This. IACI, International Academic Correspondence Inc., which is Dr. Esselen's company, acts as a "correspondent" (representative) for UNISA in the Americas.

Hille, it sounds like someone may have confused "International Academic Correspondence Inc." with "International Correspondence [Schools]," which is not related in any way.

    Jonathan,

Right. Dr. Esselen helps me with my payments to UNISA. It is "much" quicker to go through him than UNISA. For the past five years (actually six, but I have been a doctoral student for five years this July) he has gone above and beyond the call of duty. Always answers emails and does actually call you back. :)

How much does this add to the tuition by going through Dr. Esselen? Thanks.

IACI charged me $100 to work with me. That was 6 years ago. That is all I know. The tuition I pay is what I get from UNISA.

That's not that bad. I applied for more information on the IACI site. Thanks for the help.

Are there other such agents or companies like IACI on other continents? Europe? Asia? South America?

I would call Dr. Esselen and ask him. He would know.

    unisa degree phd un US

I have a PhD in English from UNISA, being the largest University in the Southern Hemisphere. I currently lecture at a College in the States and quiet literally have dozens of lecturing position offers, I say do your research before you post ridiculous comments about African Universities. South Africa is the richest, most developed country in Africa, its Universities are absolutely world class. Why bother with some second rate University in the States when you can study through an amazing one for half the cost in South Africa. Its a decision that should be a simple one, go to the University, the Main Campus is in Pretoria, be warned though you may need a map, it's huge! Meet the lecturures and then make your assumptions?

I have a PhD in English from UNISA, being the largest University in the Southern Hemisphere.

The two independent thoughts do not seem to relate to each other.

I currently lecture at a College in the States and quiet literally have dozens of lecturing position offers,

    quite, not quiet.

I say do your research before you post ridiculous comments about African Universities.

"I say" is not necessary, as we are aware you are the one making the statement.

South Africa is the richest, most developed country in Africa, its Universities are absolutely world class.

...country in Africa; its Universities... Two independent clauses should be tied with a semicolon.

Why bother with some second rate University in the States when you can study through an amazing one for half the cost in South Africa.

If this sentence is a question (Why), should it be terminated with a question mark?

Its a decision that should be a simple one, go to the University, the Main Campus is in Pretoria, be warned though you may need a map, it's huge!

    It's ...
... simple one; go to the ...
    ... University. The ...
    ... need a map; it's huge! ...

Meet the lecturures and then make your assumptions?

    ... lecturers ...
This reads more like a statement than a question. Maybe it should end with a period.

I only have a high-school education and English is not my native language.

Would you mind sharing where exactly you "Lecture"? Can you give a sample of the few of the "Dozens" of schools that are offering you work?

By the way, in the US, most permanent positions are at the professor and not at the Lecturer level. Lecturer in most cases means adjunct or someone that is paid per course and is not in a permanent position.

If you do your "research" and read the questions about UNISA, most of the time is from people that want a PhD in order to qualify as a permanent tenure faculty in the US and not just to "Lecture" in colleges that normally only requires a Masters degree.

The argument is that although UNISA is an accredited school, it might not be competitive enough for someone that has little academic experience and wants to jump into a tenure track position in the US.

UNISA does not appear in any recognized international ranking (you are welcome to probe me wrong). Webometrics (not a recognized ranking) puts then in a world rank of 1306 that is not bad but far from being world class institution (Home | Ranking Web of Universities).

Again, a PhD UNISA is perfectly fine for people wanting to become adjuncts, non permanent lecturers in the US but we are yet to see evidence that is a safer bet for a tenure track position.

Are you saying that the post is a fake just because the OP claims a PhD in English from a world class institution with poor grammar and with only one post in the forum? Shame on you!

I'm not sure what that web-thingy is using to rank universities. It ranks the U. of Leicester at 488, while the Times ranks it 161, equal with U. of Iowa.

Webometrics is not a recognized ranking but it is the only that I found that ranks UNISA. It ranks based on the presence of the web, it assumes that the more the university is mentioned the better it is which is not true for most of the cases.

UNISA is unranked in most of the world wide recognized rankings like Times. Not a bad thing but let's do go crazy and say UNISA is a world class institution better than any second tier American school.

Another correction is that with Nigeria having finally renormalized their GDP calculation, their economy is now the largest in Africa, so they have a better claim to being called the richest.
