Nooo...but the cliffhanging in Congress is making me rethink gold.

I'm all for sound money, but am also cautious about how major changes would impact those at the bottom. So I can't help but wonder what that transition process might look like, especially when we didn't move to a debt-based federal and international financial system overnight. (Not that it matters, since I can't see this happening, like ever.)

Anyway, if I were the Democrats, I would call the Republicans' bluff. They're not going to let the US default. For all their bluster, the people they care about are themselves, and letting the US economy crash would be terrible for them personally. Besides, even if it turns out they are enough of a suicide pact to do so, then speaking of precious metals, the Biden administration can always mint the coin.

Oh, they might. Ideology trumps government.

    Yes, but self-interest uber alles.

Nah, not necessarily. There have been a bunch of Republicans who have been discovered to be gay or bisexual after they've been campaigning to make anything but heterosexuality a literal crime.

I'll guess it is still self interest that is driving them. Just the self interest of power in that case.

I keep hoping DeSantis suddenly comes out as gay.

If he does, we'll likely see Mike Pence rushing in to "cure" him. It'd be like Oral Roberts' weekly TV tent-show "healing" of the 50's.

Severe inflation, by the way, can have an interesting effect on distribution of wealth. Poor people tend to owe money to wealthy people and businesses. The Weimar hyperinflation transferred a good deal of real wealth away from the rich and powerful by making debts easier to pay off, at least according to the IMF. I don't think that this redistribution is enough of an advantage to justify the other pains though.

As for the Trillion Dollar Coin, I'd love to see it. Absurdity is usually entertaining and it wouldn't do anything really except draw the fangs of the GOP. The money the Coin would back is already borrowed and out there in the economy.

Maybe the reverse could bear a portrait of DeSantis with "Don't say gay!" in place of the usual motto.

The obverse would be Mickey Mouse brandishing a set of (three fingered) brass knuckles.

I misread that, first time through. I read 'the monkey the coin would back' and I wondered which of their own monkeys the GOP were intending to back this time... and how a coin ordered by a Democratic President would be used to do it. I thought maybe somehow, Trump might abscond with it for his campaign coffers.

Well, the whole debt limit thing is monkey business.
