Rich's statement could definitely be read as insulting. It wouldn't be so different from someone responding to Rich and telling him that "it is uncharacteristic of someone who claims to have a doctorate to know how to condescendingly reply to a poster and yet be totally clueless and ignorant as to how his reply would affect the person he's responding to."

Yes, a simple "I disagree with you because..." would have sufficed and would have contributed to a healthier debate, not a situation such as this in which the poster with whom one has disagreed feels personally attacked.

    -------------------
Used to being challenged, Carl? Did you notice that I said the suit against UC was wrong? Do you notice me arguing religion with Bill, or TomH, or Sensei Abner, all of whom are able to post civilly? Have you ever at any time heard me defend so-called creation science? Or argue that it should be taught in public schools on any level? I have spent exactly one year in a tertiary school where I agreed with the school's view of religion. All the schools from which I hold degrees are either secular or liberal. I never found religious agreement a prerequisite to getting a good education. I still don't. But Dr Douglas chose to be insulting, then ran from his words (like Neil Hayes).

I have defended Rich against his detractors for years. No, he never asked me to do so, and, no, I am sure my inconsequential defence of him counts for almost nothing in the broader scheme of things, although it did gain me the animosity of some of the same psychos, has-beens, never-wases, and pathetic wannabes who are evilly obsessed with Rich and his doctorate.

I continue to admire his personal academic accomplishments and am grateful for his leadership in distance education. I wish him all the best in his learning and teaching endeavours. He is entitled to his religious or anti-religious views and to express them in any way he wishes. And I am entitled to think him a churl for his indifference to the canons of civility when it comes to his well-wishers.

    Gentleman:

You know I respect all of you as persons with differing opinions. I am loosely addressing Uncle Janko, Ted Heiks, Nosborne, Rich, Carl, etc.

Father Janko does have a point, I have never heard him cram religion down anybody's throat. He is open minded and fair. I am not trying to start trouble here. Why doesn't everybody just take a deep breath and relax? We are all friends and should remain so not matter what religious beliefs, if any.

Just my two cents. Of course, nobody has to listen to me, I just wanted to add a few humble comments. If you would like to ask me to mind my own business, I understand.

    Respectfully,

    Abner

You are. But you are wrong. I have not been uncivil to anyone. But I have been very uncivil to some beliefs that I find silly. I have no idea who believes what, however, and I'm not interested in attacking anyone personally.

I appreciate the very kind words you've had regarding me over the years. The people who have conspired to hurt you? I would choose to stop them and even to make them pay.

I have been very critical about some behaviors I feel are internally inconsistent. I do not wish to "attack" anyone. But I will attack these ideas as they're presented. If others who adhere to them are offended by this, perhaps they should either ignore the goings on, or step in and offer their points of view. But I've attacked no one.

Again, I have the utmost respect for Uncle Janko. But we disagree fundamentally on this subject. If I've been ill-mannered in my expression, I am sorry. But I am not sorry for what I feel and what I have to argue.

We share more than 98% of our DNA and almost all of our genes with our closest living relative, the chimpanzee.

To me, this is a fact that would seem to support the theory of evolution.

To me too, Bill. There is not much difference in the genetic configuration of an amoeba and one that of a person, and therefore not much room for maneuvring for a creator/designer.

Sure, but if you can swallow the idea of a Biblical Creator, surely you can get behind the notion that it just LOOKS this way; God made it the way it is but if you INSIST on drawing false conclusions, that's YOUR problem...

    Gevalt!
