A number of Western academics have found a career in the UAE and other Gulf states to be more lucrative than one at home.

I think it likely needs to be. Average income is higher than US (I checked) and I don't imagine it's cheap to live there. Lot of money around. I'm guessing it's not all oil-rich sheikhs' dinars, either. Plutocrats of all kinds - foreign mobsters, Russian oligarchs, former politicos - the "usual suspects." Always interesting.

Can you really not imagine that a non-Western society that has become wealthy did so by being a good place for legitimate business to be conducted?

I'm not saying the UAE didn't become wealthy by legitimate means. I'm saying it has attracted the attention of some foreigners with a lot of money, including those who may NOT have earned it by legitimate means. And of course, they're welcome, as they spend some of that money - and that's good for the UAE. Can you really not imagine that?

The kind of people I described - are there. You can read about them. I do. Yes, the Emirates were built on legit. money - by legit people. But some of the newcomers... it's like old-time Casablanca, Marseilles, or Corsica, but with a new cast, from other nations.
