    RA = Regional Accreditation

Institutional accreditation by one of the six CHEA and USDoE recognized agencies, each responsible for a geographic area of the country.

"GMU, Touro, UVa, and Harvard are all ranked as a whole; as opposed to each college separately within the university."

GMU does not have a continuing ed arm, that is why all GMU degrees are the same institution. However, you cannot claim that Penn State-The Behrend College MBA is the same as Penn State-Smeal MBA. This seems to be what you're suggesting.

The University of Virginia's College at Wise is ranked separately, yet they are a college under the same univesity. It is a branch campus with different degrees than UVa. Do you actually argue this point?

UMd. University College (regional Masters North) is ranked differently than UMd. (national U) Are you suggesting they are the same degree?

UT-Austin has different ranking than UT's World Campus. Are you suggesting they are the same degree?

TUI sounds like the continuing ed arm of Touro with its own degrees. As such, it is probably ranked differently.

I didn't realize how expanded Touro really is:

Moscow Touro University. The biggest university in Russia has affiliations with Touro College.
    http://www.touro.ru/

Touro Law School of New York.
    http://www.tourolaw.edu/

Touro University College of Osteopathic Medicine
    http://www.tucom.edu/

Plus, they have smaller branches I believe in Israel, China and Korea. PLus owning their own virtual university.

I have heard good stuff about TUI's quality of education. Sure, they are very new and that goes against them now, but the word of mouth will surely spread in its favor.

  5. Touro may have expanded, but it's really not well known even in Manhattan. I had at best a vague awareness of its existence before hearing about it in the DL context. And my wife (who was born in Manhattan -- not a latecomer like myself) says she has no knowledge of the school. Maybe we just move in the wrong circles...

There are at least 20 colleges in Manhattan. Chances are that many New Yorkers may not have heard about Touro College. It is one of the lesser-known colleges in Manhattan. Likewise, many residents of Laurel in Maryland have not heard about Capitol College. Both are small colleges.

    Just for fun

I came across this site (one of Touro's campuses in NY):

    http://www.apdigital.com/

    - Click on <Institutional>
    - Click on the first thumb nail (second row)

I don't think that Touro Moscow is anywhere near the size of, or affiliated with, Moscow State University (wich, by the way, has the biggest university building in the world). http://www.msu.ru/english/
Probably there is a dozen or so specialty state universities (Moscow Aviation Institute, Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, Moscow Bauman's Technological University to name the most prominent) bigger than any Touro campus in Moscow alone.

    Touro is impressive nevertheless.

Is this the profile of Touro University in Moscow? I am unable to find the URL.

When one graduates from UC Santa Barbara, one does not receive a degree from the main UC campus in Berkeley.

When one graduates from Touro University International, one does not receive a degree from Touro College.

I don't see how Touro College's "tier" ranking (which I think is a poor measure of the quality of a school anyway) has much bearing on the perceived quality of a Touro University International degree.

Question: When someone graduates from Touro University International and seeks a job, how does one list the degree on resumes and applications? I would think that it would be from Touro University International with a California location, not Touro College with a New York location.

Question: When said applicant's resume hits the recruiter's desk, and the recruiter (or some other agency) attempts to verify the veracity of said degree, does he/she find Touro University International listed in whatever reference guide used? Or must that person find Touro College, and then make the connection (different name, different state)?

Common sense says that a dl degree will look better if it is affiliated with a brick and mortar school with a good reputation. So far Touro College's ranking has gone up this year.

Whether this Touro College's ranking has anything to do with TUI's quality of education is a whole other story IMO.

Rich Douglas had it right. Actually the better example is that the ranking of UNC (The flagship Chapel Hill campus - the Tarheels - Top 50 Doctoral I) has no bearing on UNC-Pembroke (Tier 4 Southern Masters). Totally different schools in the same system. Regardless of where UNC goes in the rankings, UNC Pembroke's degree will always be different. Consequently it is irrelevant that they are members of the same system. Pembroke's success is largely independent of Carolina's.

I don't know about "common sense," but what about the questions I asked? Who's to know that Touro University International is affiliated with Touro College? And what is the relationship? There doesn't seem to be any. And what about the whole university-as-a-college-division stuff? Rather than relying on common sense, let's count on observable facts.

  16. A concern is that would-be employers or admissions officers will be misled into believing that a TUI degree was earned at the pedagogically distinct Touro College. Would it be unethical to list a TUI degree on a resume simply as "Touro College"? I would say yes.

    Gert,

One should list on his/her CV exactly what is written on the degree itself:

"Touro University International, Branch Campus of Touro College New York"

    Eli
    ABD, Touro University International

    What is the problem

I am biased since I am student at TUI but I can't see the problem with linking TUI with Touro. I wouldn't go so far as to say that my degree was from Touro College on a resume but something like: "TUI branch campus of Touro College" would be acceptable in my view.

In my view being a branch campus of another school means that you are under the control of the main campus, Touro College, and subject to all the perks and criticism that the main campus might receive. I certainly believe that if Touro were lowered in rating that people would come down hard on TUI!

    A small question...

Does anyone know whether Touro College has any direct control over TUI, on the board or something like that? If it were a totally seperate unit that was only associated with Touro by name then I would perhaps accept the argument that TUI should not be ranked along side Touro.

    Observation:

Go to Touro College's site <www.touro.edu>

Check <Web Courses> menu (main page)

You will find the following listing:

    - Touro University International
    - Military Online course (TUI)
    - Online course NY/Israel
    - Blackboard
