As it happens, my daughter goes to school in Fremont. I have been amazed at the cost of real estate in that area. Just out of curiosity I looked. Oh, my. I suppose it is worth it to some folks, though. Tom Nixon
Cheap construction Mr. Engineer: I don't know much about construction (well, hardly anything, to tell the truth) but you should see some of the $250,000-$350,000 houses being put up here in Las Cruces. This is the Land of Adobe, an interesting and enduring building material. MY house, in its original 2/3 anyway, is adobe. I have raised hardwood floors, lath and plaster interior, glass doorknobs, copper plumbing for the most part, typical 1940s construction, you get the picture. Small, to be sure, but comfortable even during extreme heat. The single glazed double hung windows aren't energy efficient but I love them anyway. Down the street from me a fellow is building a largish place, maybe 2,500 square feet. Frame covered with particle board covered with cement stucco and all of it on a lousy concrete slab. I dunno; maybe in 50 years that house will still be standing...maybe.
Hey, I tried to start a DegreeInfo 12-step program here in Massachusetts, but Dave Yamada kicked it by himself, Jack Tracey moved to Connecticut, and PatsFan keeps insisting he doesn't have a problem.
