I don't know any reasonable person who thinks that sort of "round up the usual suspects" mindset is a good thing. But if we use that as a prohibited extreme and doing nothing new as the other end of the spectrum, isn't there a place in the middle where there's increased security without loss of civil liberty?

Sure there is, how about we cling to the rule of law that helped make this country great while we do that.

No doubt law enforcement, especially at the federal level need to be unshackled....proven by not one but two investigations into this guy. But that doesnt mean ignoring his rights or infringing on the rights of others.

I bet you can recall about 2, maybe 3 instances where a so called "assault rifle" was used in a crime......of the millions in circulation, a couple have been used in events you can even remember. But the problem is in the hearts and minds. Assault rifles, even the true fully automatic sort aren't even the weapon of choice in the middle East....terrorist there use explosives. McVeigh and Nichols used explosives in Ok. city with three times the death toll of Orlando.....who gives a damn what weapon is used....you have to fix the underlying problem.

Not sure if this is a common thing with you Kizmet, or if I'm just special, but this isn't the first time you've responded to a disagreement with me by misrepresenting what I said and then brushing me off and doubling down when I try to correct your misrepresentation.

If you don't want to have a fair discussion, then I'm not going to bother.

If you're following the story, this guy had a long history of behavioral problems. He had 31 documented cases of behavioral problems in the third grade. His teacher said that he often talked about sex and violence and put his hands where they didn't belong. He was fired and kicked out of corrections officer training for repeatedly falling asleep in class. I wonder if they gave him a psychological evaluation before they hired him. He was probably conflicted about his sexuality because they found out that he was on gay dating apps. His "allegiance" to various terrorist groups made no sense because he would switch from Shiite groups to Sunni groups.

    If I may

I hope I don't come off as sanctimonious, this is not my intention. My comments are not directed at anyone in particular. I would just like to say it is good to just lighten up a little. These are just discussions, not fights to the death or anything. Speaking for myself, I guess you could say I have spent my time in the arena. If I am confronted with malice, I can become malicious. If I am confronted with violence, I can become violent. I have grown to dislike these things, I guess you can say. So, I am trying to make an honest effort to dispense of such things.

Anyway, I am not even quite sure of what I am trying to say, but we are all friends here. Just keep it cool.

So-called "assault rifles" as described by the media are not even assault rifles. An assault rifle is capable of full-automatic fire, meaning that as long as you hold the trigger back, it will keep firing until you run out of ammo. Full-automatic weapons have been outlawed in the United States since 1934, when the Tommy Gun was the sexy weapon the press loved to talk about. Only the armed forces, law enforcement, and very, very, very few collectors can possess them. The civilians who do have them need a Class III Federal Firearms License, as well as the necessary state permit(s). Getting a Class III FFL is like having a background check on steroids. The ATF comes to your home or place of business, wherever they're going to be stored, and has to inspect the safety measures in place.

So, once again, the press has screwed up, but continues to double, triple, and quadruple down on their mistake, which has to be intentional at this point. "Assault rifle" sounds so much more sexy and dangerous than "Semi-automatic rifle", which is exactly what the AR-15 type is.

About the evil semi-auto black guns; they're used in 1/10th of 1 percent of all homicides in the United States. Not 1 percent, but ONE TENTH OF ONE PERCENT. They're the Boogie Man that the press and the Democrats (which are essentially one in the same) love to scare people with, when in reality, you stand a better chance of being hit by a bus than murdered with an AR-15.

If the Democrats were actually serious about saving lives, they'd propose reforms on prescription medication, because opiates kill FAR more people than guns do, every single day. Why aren't we seeing calls for opiate safe storage, or the publishing of names who people who are prescribed opiod painkillers, so parents can keep their kids out of houses where the real killers are?

Just keep doing what you are doing young Master. I have been watching you. You have overcome some very difficult things in your life, and you have managed to turn out well despite the odds. This is highly admirable.

I really wasn't trying to be funny, but I guess a lot of good jokes start that way.

It's not often that I agree with the ACLU, but they got that one right.
