Can you drop out of a race you were never in?

Only if you can quit a job at some place you never worked ... or drop out of a University, where you weren't enrolled. Nah - it's an oxymoron - accent on the last part. Not meaning you, of course, @nosborne48 (I hasten to add.) I understand why you asked.

"Stupid is as stupid does, sir." Tom Hanks as Forrest Gump.

None of them, save one, is "in."

For some unknown reason instead of saying that someone is dropping out of a political race they instead say that they are suspending their campaign. True Tim Scott can't drop out of the race that he was never in but he can suspend his campaign. Now maybe that is why they suspend the campaign instead of dropping out of the race? :D

There is a reason having to do with contributions but I don't remember the details.

A lot of times campaign committees borrow money, including from the candidates themselves. By suspending rather than ending, they can keep accepting donations which they use to pay back themselves and their other lenders.

A suspended campaign can still fundraise and pay extant debts.

  10. He went after Nikki Haley and one of the debates and she destroyed him. I've said from the very beginning, do not underestimate Nikki Haley. I say that today.

In a race without Trump, maybe. But maybe not even then, since those voters would likely go for the next Trumpette. And that's not Haley.

Niki Haley would get my vote if I was voting in the Republican primary, which I'm not.

"Trumpette" sounds like a dancing girl.

Put an S, before the "t" on the beginning and see what it sounds like... If it's not familiar, ask Donald Trump. He'd know - instantly.

Haley would be a formidable general election candidate.

I like her, too. If she isn't elected in the US, maybe we could move some people around and find her a Parliamentary office here in Canada. And yes, @Stanislav, I think she and Chrystia might get along well. The two women could save us all. It's what women do.

Somewhere, back in the day, I read her story, in her own words. I was impressed. Despite all the subsequent Republican goings-on, I still am. She's a good person - and that puts her among the rarest of Republicans, in the political arena.

Perhaps. Unless the base decided to stay home because they don't have their guy.
