https://www.yahoo.com/news/london-not-safe-anymore-says-134136626.html "London is “not safe” anymore, Sir Jim Ratcliffe has said. The billionaire claimed that Britain’s cities were not as safe as they used to be and revealed he no longer wears a watch in the capital for fear of being mugged. Sir Jim said a rise in robbery and shoplifting rates was part of a wider failure by authorities to provide basic public services, including ensuring there is enough prison space to house criminals. The 71-year-old owner of chemical company Ineos and Manchester United football club is worth an estimated £29.6 billion, making him the third richest man in the UK. He said he has “to be wary” of his safety in London and last year saw someone stabbed to death on CCTV outside his office in Knightsbridge over a Rolex watch. “I can’t wear a watch in London, and I just need to be a bit wary, a bit careful,” he told the Sunday Times. The fatal mugging occurred on Brompton Road, near Hyde Park, and was captured by Ineos’ security footage. “He died in a pool of blood because somebody tried to take his Rolex and he resisted,” he said. “About a year ago we had three guys in hoodies, with machetes, right outside the office, opposite Harrods.” There were 116 murders in the capital in 2023-24, up from 112 on the year before, while there was also a surge in recorded knife crime offences. The 15,016 recorded last year was the second highest on record and up by about a fifth on the 12,786 seen the year before." Some states, and cities in USA also have a high rise in crtime. Mar 26, 2024 · LOS ANGELES - Violent crime in Los Angeles is up 2.9% compared to March 2023, and robberies have increased by 9.5%, law enforcement officials said Tuesday.
I used to love the UK, especially London. It is one of the reasons why I want to earn an MBA there. However, with many trips to London, I feel it is becoming a ghetto place. Diversity is great, but when people immigrate to another country and don't want to adopt the local culture and customs, becoming crap. If one is leaving their homeland for a better life, why still bring all the politics, culture, languages, etc. with them? With all the illegal immigrants flowing in, it becomes a security problem. Legal immigrants are great because individuals have to go through the vetting process and patiently wait their turn. It is the same as many major cities in the United States. I used to like to move to NYC for C-level job opportunities, but now I would rather have a mid-management job in a small metropolitan area.
Some attribute this to the failure of the governments to adjust policies. It can be that neglected practices in absorption of the migrants, liberal policies in combating crime. Education failures on multiple levels, no accountability. Corporate world is experiencing the same problem, great culture at work, replaced by Third World countries "oppressive and toxic" cultures and practices at workplace. Going from family oriented and flexible workplace to "enslaving" work cultures. I met people at work who suffered, even some were suicidal, but their rescue actually came the unions, as laws allowed creation or joining the unions the workers lives changed for the better, much better. It's a controversial issue but important one. Indeed, great cities are major victims of failed policies, homelessness due to high cost of living, crime, drugs and mental illness crisis. Leadership must do more to protect the people, be it in UK, US or any other country, especially democracies.
That sounds 100% made up. In fact, I'm in Lagos, Nigeria typing this right now, and everything I see here about the work culture that strikes me as unreasonable clearly descends from the attitudes of British administrators.
I am not sure if this opinion piece is correct (surveys showing 7 out of 10 young Nigerians wanting to leave their nation lend some credibility to the opinion piece), but the Nigerian dream is to leaave Nigeria; https://africasacountry.com/2021/03/the-nigerian-dream-is-to-leave-nigeria. The legacy of colonialism is a significant contributing factor to this sad phenomenon. However, I would not place all the blame on a single factor. I believe that Nigeria should thrive as a nation and the West's "open door" immigration policy only adds to the problem by sucking the talent out of the country. I would hope that a Nigerian dream would encompass the growth and economic expansion of their own nation.
I wasn't talking about migration, I was simply showing that what Lerner said was nonsense. That said, "the West" doesn't have any single policy on anything, certainly not an open door immigration policy. Have you been watching too much fear mongering on right-wing TV or something?
I put the "open door" in quotes, because I know that that there is no single policy of this kind. I wanted to emphasize the kind of policies that make large-scale migration possible across the Western world.
What Lerner said is very realistic, based on decades of experiences, of multiple people in the corporate world and work place in general. Corporate business needs change constantly, and when Bill Clinton era started importing employees from then undeveloped countries, those employees brought with them different culture to work. As they climbed the ranks, and good % became managers, the culture changed, adjusted and in many of my colleagues experiences, for the worse. Not every corp but many became very toxic. I worked with great managers from other countries, not all have the old countries work attitudes, but many do. I guess partly because many companies went from national to international, etc. Not one of the former co-workers have a positive experience with the changes. The same happened to service, that got much worse.
