When it was first announced: Hated it with a passion and refused to use it.

A year later: Hated it with a passion, but started using "now Excelsior College."

Now: I've actually grown to like it, but it still brings to mind packing material and Captain Sulu's starship.

    Cheers,

    how much did it cost?

Many institutions hire consulting firms to help with name changes. Union hired a consultant.
I wonder which consultant Excelsior hired? and how much did it cost?
I wonder if Argosy hired the same consuting firm?
    All the best!

I lived in New York for a few years, so I've always known Excelsior as the state motto. To me it made absolutely perfect sense to call the school that.

(Just my 2 cents before taxes)

    Let me think.

What would I rather have on a degree?

University of the State of New York or Excelsior College?

The first sounds way more important than the second. Sounds like a really fine school.

    You must admit

    It is better than
    American Public University Systems
AKA American Military University ( The initial name and seperate school)

Hi, So where did you go to school?
Oh Me? I earned my BS from APlus, A Putz, APUSS.
    I mean APUS.
    Got my degree in Pimpleology
    :p :D

AFAIK the degrees still state "Univ. of the State of New York".

I had one of the private Regent's Degrees (as opposed to the earlier public ones) and it still says USNY. (Which of course everyone confuses with the much different organization SUNY).

    did not know

I did not know the nickname for NY state was Excelsior. I thought it was the Empire State. If Excelsior is sort of another word for NY it sort of makes sense within the state. However, looking at Excelsior from across the pond (lake champlain), it doesn't really say much to me. But I guess if Excelsior is targeting students from the state of NY, it really does not need to say anything to the rest of the country.
Capella, Argosy, they are targeting the North American continent and to some extent the world.
    All the best!

The nickname of New York is the Empire State, the motto is Excelsior. One of the SUNY branches is Empire State College.

Empire State College has it all over Excelsior College as far as the name goes. And besides I STILL think Excelsior sounds rather " ethnic " ( I grew up in Chicago ).

I think you will find the Excelsior name will grow on you. It did on me. Overall, I think this was one of the best alternatives for the former Regents College for a name because once they went private they were no longer "University of the State of New York" and the New York Regents gave the College 3 years to change its name from Regents College.

It's where my money is going, it's where I will get my diploma from, and all I can say is, I HOPE SO.

    Re: did not know

I'm not sure what Argosy is targeting. When I look that word up I get "A fleet of ships" or "A very large cargo ship".

Capella is a really bright star. I'm not sure how either term relates to the school that is named after it, except possibly the exploration of the obscure.

    It grew on me, too!

Yup--I hated the name change, too. But it grew on me.

I suppose I hated "Excelsior" College because I grw up in the Twin Cities area; there "Excelsior" is just another suburb on the far western fringes of Minneapolis, located along Lake Minnetonka, where Tonka Toys orginally came from.

But seriously, folks--I beliebe that when the Pataki privatisation program cam down, Excelsior became a no-brainer. I even had the historical precedent of Charter Oak State College on its side!

Dig this explanation of a stained glass design at COSC incorporating Oak leaves (Duh!) into it:
" For the state of Connecticut, the history of the Charter Oak (White Oak, Quercus Alba) is the symbol of spiritual strength and love of freedom. The client, Charter Oak State College, wanted this symbol incorporated into the windows without a literal representation. Surrounding the front entrance of the college, approximately 65 square feet of stained glass is set into aluminum frames. The colored glass is not opaque—it is translucent, with the glass filtering the light into the space. The artwork also has areas of clear glass to allow light to come through into the lobby, and be integrated with the clear glass doors and upper windows.
[NOW, here's the beauty part of an artisitc and DL educational statement:]
"Images of the Charter Oak" is intended to work well at a distance, yet to offer the viewer much detail upon closer view.

    when I think of...

When I think of capella, I then think of accapella, singing without support? Would an attendee be a capsule?
When I think of excelsior, I think if an old warners brothers cartoon that ends with "...excelsior..." Would an attended be an excelsiorian?
When I think of charter oaks, I think of a tree nursery patenting an oak tree. Would an attendee by an oakhead?
When I think of Argosy, I think of Jason and the Argonaunts (did they do very well?) Would an attendee be ar argonaunt?
When I think of NorthWEst Centeral, I think of a mixed up compass. Would an attendee be a centerist?
    All the best!

I just use the name that is on my diploma - even though in the last alumni publication I see I can now buy a "30th anniversary commemorative certificate" that looks a lot like a diploma with the new name for the low price of $75 (unframed) or $149 (framed).

I saw that too. It said something about "many people have requested this."

I guess some folks have too much money.

I didn't get that alumni publication. If anyone can send me the proper address to get on their list I would appreciate it.

I just write "USNY" or "University of The State of NY" and have never been asked anything about it.

Never judge a book...errr... school soley on its name. "Dumb" names can be explained (or laughed at), but dumb content is forever.
