OK, this makes me feel compelled to share the story of my favorite rejection.

I receive a FedEx package one morning at work. It was the kind where I had to sign for it (the front desk couldn't). So, I'm pretty convinced I'm either being sued or recalled to active duty. Instead, I find a resume with a six page cover letter attached.

Pages 1-3 were dedicated to the "applicant's" demands. They included a salary of no less than $85,000, cell phone reimbursement and four weeks paid vacation annually. In addition, we would be required to pay for said applicant to take the actuarial exams (despite the fact that we don't employ actuaries). The remaining three pages were dedicated to telling me how he justified this inflated salary because, despite not possessing any of the qualifications for any active job postings, he had done stuff that was "significantly more challenging." I was also given four days to respond with either a preliminary offer of employment or, at a minimum, a lunch meeting (at my expense) with him at the Columbia Club in NYC.

Funny as it was, he actually had some decent credentials. Former Navy Operations Specialist. He had a bachelors in Mathematics from a school I don't recall and a Masters in Stat from Columbia. It always stuck with me.

    Ask and ye shall receive!

Ask too much and ye shall be laughed at! :icon16:

As long as someone has a defended dissertation and proper research to back it, I don't see the problem.

If the supposed doctorate is like Kent Hovind's (famous creationist with diploma mill degrees) then there would be a huge problem.

There is a similar case with a faculty member at an accredited seminary with unaccredited degrees. This case is at the Holmes Institute; a nationally accredited metaphysical seminary.

The Holmes Institute is accredited by the Distance Education Accrediting Commission. The faculty member I talk about has bachelor's through doctoral degrees from the unaccredited Emerson Theological Institute.

The Emerson Theological Institute is the unaccredited counterpart of the Holmes Institute. Both schools deal with metaphysical ministry. I am not sure if graduate research papers from either school is available to the general public.

This is a good point. Most schools (or newly minted PhDs) make arrangements for dissertations to be openly available in their own libraries and/or places like ProQuest

    https://www.proquest.com/products-services/dissertations/

The standard thinking is that if an unaccredited school does not allow access to dissertations then it suggests they don't want them scrutinized. Questions arise as to whether the dissertations are of adequate quality to warrant the PhD award.

In this regard, different people draw the line in different places. Some might say that if a doctoral degree is only going to be used within the confines of a specific congregation then, where's the harm? Others have different ideas.

For what it is worth, here is a PhD dissertation from Lousiana Baptist University. It is 285 pages. To be fair, this may not be representative since this person has two Masters degree in theological subjects from Bob Jones University and therefore had a background to build on. An LBU graduate with degrees from lesser institutions may or may not produce a similar dissertation. I leave it to our scholars to assess the merit of the dissertation.
