I see California Pacific University listed at the Institutions Whose Degrees are Illegal to Use in Texas website but I do not see SCUPS (Southern California University for Professional Studies) there.

    Wonder why?

As for me I would not attend SCUPS even for free! RA or maybe NA but unaccredited no-way!

Doing a search on google earth is a good idea. Not interested in a sales ad through the phone or e-mail.

I have an unlimited Skype account that does not give caller id information so calling is not an issue. Cost me around $15 per year. I ask a specific, directed question. If they do not answer it I request to speak to someone that can. Easy enough.

I used filters on my e-mail account. Takes no time to send all unwanted e-mails straight to the trash.

I do not contact someone unless there is a specific need. E-mail allows me to keep a record of all correspondences for future references.

Bottom line: Do you want to get the correct information? When I need financials on a project I want the real thing, not someone's opinion.

    - It is not necessary for me to have the photo. I was making casual electronic conversation. If no one has the answer or cares to respond, thats fine. We can post about other more interesting things. By the way, my computer is bigger than yours :D

Oh, yeah? Well I have an old 8088 XT that could be an anchor for a small boat. Weights a ton and takes up the whole desk. Remember the old desktop models? Was my first computer love and cannot part with it. The power of dual 5 1/4 floppy drives!

Hilarious question! Well, it makes sense that SCUPS would try to escape WASC accreditation / oversight as well, but I imagine they will try to work toward DETC accreditation where they are. :)

Google Earth is a cool tool. For example, Using Touro University-International for an example, I put the address at TUI's website:

5665 Plaza Drive, 3rd Floor, Cypress, CA 90630

Seeing third floor, I figured it is shared office space.

Google: 5665 Plaza Drive, Cypress, CA 90630 - The address without third floor and sure enough, all sorts of other businesses at that address.

Google Earth shows it as appearing to be an office building.

Not perfect but quick, easy and you get interesting answers.

Dave Wagner won't answer your question because he hasn't answered a tough question yet: just the easy ones. ;)

Well, if we are engaging in oneupsmanship then I need to say I have one of the few Colossus machines made during WWII, picked it up surplus at an Army-Navy store, went in to buy an old field phone and that pitch man sold me this beast!

But wait. Is it a certified Colossus or an uncertified Colossus? If it is an uncertifed one it may not be legal in the State of Florida. Thus it would be disqualified from our mine is bigger than yours competition!

Seriously, I had no idea such a thing even exisited. I googled the name and found an interesting article about it on Wiki. Very cool!

Vini provided some useful historical context to the decision to attend California Pacific University.

At the risk of stating the obvious, I'll say that California Pacific offered the best all-around pure DL DBA available in North America, when I made my decision in 1995, before Touro and NoCentral U existed. The content and rigor of the program was as good or better than the other California State Approved programs and the school did not have any discernable negative image to weigh it down. Residencies and trips overseas were not ever a possibility for me for several unique reasons, including responsibilities in a struggling church ministry. (By the way, at this time, I'm not aware of any reason why California Pacific could not seek DETC accreditation under the new doctoral initiative, so it was a good educational decision for me.)

When I was sure that I was going to finish the California Pacific DBA, I applied (and was accepted) to the best RA pure online DL Ph.D. BA that I could find, which is/was Touro. Touro went from Middle States accredited (i.e., really good) to WASC accredited (i.e., best of breed), so seems that I was right, again, not to tout me, of course, but the blind luck of the decision.

If I'd listened the to all the feeble-minded naysayers who advocated not doing anything way back when the earth was cooling and dinosaurs roamed the earth, I'd be wearing the dunce cap they are now sporting. I'm a leader, not a follower, so peer pressure does not have much sway with me.

    Does that help?

I'm not sure what else I could say to help you except that a doctorate is so much work that you need to first evaluate your motives for seeking it; in my opinion, full-time teaching and research are primary motivations that will sustain through the whole process. At this time, if you had the same restrictions but research interests that I had, then you have two options in North America: (1) Touro and (2) NoCentral U. If you can't afford these options, then you could very carefully look at the DETC and State-Approved options but those won't prepare you to teach full time. If you can afford more, can do residencies, or don't mind looking outside North America, then there is a plethora of good, even great options.

    Best of luck to you.

Wow, Dave Wagner finally answered why he went to an unaccredited school for a DBA! At last!

A most interesting thread. The moral to the story is DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH!

Otherwise, you could end up going to an open-admissions for-profit unaccredited school that is useless in some situations and illegal in others. For more information go to Dr. Gollin's Pigeons site:

    http://web.hep.uiuc.edu/home/g-gollin/pigeons/

Dr. Gollin was elected to a three year term on the Board of Directors of the Council for Higher Education Accreditation, CHEA.

    Love that name pigeons!

ASK QUESTIONS: Is the school you are considering up for sale to the highest bidder, non or for-profit?
Try The Chronicle of Higher Education

    http://chronicle.com/

For example, type Touro in search and you will see an article that says:

This may or may not be a concern to the prospective student.

Does the school have CHEA-recognized professional accreditation? http://www.chea.org/pdf/CHEADirectory.pdf will give you the list of recognized agencies. For example, in business the AACSB and ACBSP are listed. The IACBE is NOT. Some schools may not wish to be professionally accredited. Their mission statement might not embrace the concept. Nothing wrong with that. But when a school claims accreditation by an agency not recognized by the Department of Education or CHEA, be careful!

Don't fall for sales pitches from desperate salespeople like "one regional accrediting agency is better than the other." Nonsense! Talk about grasping for straws. Research it yourself. It is so easy to do!

Would be nice if degreeinfo was a no-spin zone, but since that is not likely to happen you must do you own research and check the facts.

I will take this one Dave!

I guess you have not been that long in distance education and in this forum, the limitation of some degrees have been mention and explained for years and years, Some scandal that involved SCUPS( unaccredited and parent company of NCU), this one was brought to you by the one and only Dr. Bear. Some members of this forum have register in less than wonderful schools. That is that, NCU have been around only for 11 years now, and have been accredited for a few years.

My Universities at least the ones that RA accredited have been around for mores years that NCU, the youngest one been around for more than 30 plus year and accredited for the same time. So my Universities of choice have been around for very long time and they are well establish Institution of Higher Learning.

I guess the beef with Dave due to his position about NCU, I guess everyone is entitle to their opinion. Yes I have a MBA/DBA that is not accredited, that has a limited utility for some situations that cannot be use for teaching. If I had to do it all over, I will do it again, of course. I don’t regret all the waste of time and experiences and knowledge gained in all the colleges and universities that I have attended.

In reference my own no accredited degrees. Please note that I have 2 accredited (RA) degrees in a very hard subject (Accounting) and doing a DBA also in Accounting (RA). So, even if my degree from CPU were accredited my position today will be the same, still would have pursue the degrees I am doing now. Nothing is loss but just gain. I will use my degrees accordingly as there are fit and of course, your input is always welcome and also your opinion, when you make claims, please accordingly provided studies and publish research that can sustained your conclusions.

I see you mention Wikipedia in your posting a lot, so please note is not a reliable source of information “Wikipedia is a site containing content that is collaboratively changed. This collaborative editing may be performed by individuals who may or may not be proficient or learned in the subject in which they are making commentary.” (CSU, 2007) “The uncensored and unverified opinions contained in and on the Wikipedia site cannot be used for substantiating hypotheses or conclusions.” (CSU, 2007) This was indicated to me by NA University. Does NCU mentioned to you in any way that Wikipedia is not reliable source of information?

Thanks, like always not promoting or defending my decisions of what I have done, my degrees and all the good stuff. I am happy with my position. Because I don’t have to defend it! Now go ahead and finish you MBA in ? I am pretty sure it will meet your present and future need( so I hope).

One more thing just in case, my grammar and spelling sucks! So, I also know that one too! :D

Good reply, but I thought you said
I know all about SCUPS. Would not go there if it were for free. Also know of some things the owner did that I did not care for. Matter of fact, NCU does warn about citing wiki. But for citing what a troll is? Now really, a little stretch there, isn't it? Any complaints about my other references?

    http://www.chea.org/pdf/CHEADirectory.pdf

Insofar as grammar and spelling sucks, no problem! Mine here is not APA by any means.

    Cheers!

I appreciate hearing all your thoughts, Vini. Actually, I have nothing against NoCentral U, except suffering their anonymous shills/trolls who post vacuous messages about the school on this board hoping to keep it under discussion. They attempt to discredit posters with alternative understandings instead of attempting to discuss the topics; and they hide behind anonymity. The school would do well to send employees or students under scholarship who are knowledgable about the school and prepared to discuss it.

    Understood.
I have been always watching the forum, and I will post from time to time, when such situations arise and when clarification is needed or of course history classes needs to be given. The most important thing is that the forum keep the main mission about distance learning!

    Will talk later!
