I think it's fairly common. Sunsetting means that things will phase out. If you're already enrolled, or receiving a benefit or service you will continue to do so but nobody new will be enrolled. Versus cancelling a program and kicking out existing enrollees.

First time I heard this term was some years ago when the California BPPVE that regulated unaccredited schools was being phased out. It was said to be "sunsetting" - as there was a particular, legislated date at which its mandate would end. Now its successor, the BPPE appears to be in "sunsetting" mode as California now has an "accredit or die" law.

I think Dustin is right. The term has been around for a long time.

Not just the name. You're paying for a top-flight education administered by outstanding faculty, as well as whatever support and networking become available (limited when you're not on campus full-time).

You can get an education in many ways. You go to a university to get a degree. It is not surprising to find that the best schools are also the most expensive. They can be.

English. Math. Sociology. Arts. Education. Those are being cut.

“The Division of Academic Affairs announced on December 15, 2022 that it has responded to the ongoing university-wide rightsizing efforts by reducing its academic portfolio by 37%.The University is sunsetting 48 undergraduate programs, 24 minors, 28 graduate programs, 10 certificate programs, and one doctoral program.

Each of the impacted programs are indicated on this page, based on their category.“

I think it's called survival mechanism. They don't cut - they perish. No, I don't like it, but I can understand it. As long as they axe sports expense first. But if all they're going to be, when the pooping and crying is over and the dust settles, is another expensive jumped-up STEM trade school -- I hope they fall flat on their academic butts.

One last thing: I doubt if this will result in any significant tuition cut. This whole drastic surgical resection is because they couldn't make ends meet on the high tuition they were already getting.

(Fake-Dr. Johann shakes his head and wishes the patient good luck in the Next World.) :(
