A correspondent has asked me about New World University (Affordable Higher Education for Students Worldwide | New World University), with an office in the West Indies and a website registered in the Acension Islands. The correspondent says that its President is a long-time (more than ten years) and frequent poster on DegreeInfo.com. (I find no names on the school's website.) This is all new information to me, and I wonder what's up.

    Dr. Bear,

It cannot be me because I only know how to print diploma and process the credit card. I don't know anything about higher education administration. lol

I guess it's time to quit living a lie and come clean. The person at Degree Info who is secretly a degree mill operator is...(phone ringing)...Gotta get that, I'll have to get back to you.

    Hi John,

Yes, your correspondent is referring to me. Actually, more than one person active on this forum is helping to build New World University. Randell is the school's Provost, and has done a heroic job assembling a team of faculty members and instructional designers to put together curricula.

I hope no one minds that we haven't discussed it, but there were a few reasons not to bring it up ourselves. One is that it would be shilling, particularly when a moderator is a leader in the project. Another is that we're doing a deliberately slow rollout, we have only a few students at present and our application with Dominica's National Accreditation Board is still in process. A third reason, frankly, is that we're not inclined to spend time responding to naysayers, and this community has a number of members who have expressed what I believe is excessive skepticism of schools based in smaller developing countries.

That said, it's a pretty poorly kept secret. My sig links to my personal site, where I've blogged about it, and my LinkedIn and Facebook profiles refer to it, and so forth. There are a number of other forum participants who are aware of what we're doing, and we're happy to speak with people interested in productive conversations, especially people in developing countries.

Anyway, for those who are curious, New World University is based in Dominica and reaches students in developing Commonwealth countries through distance learning and partner organizations. Our partner organization model is not dissimilar to that used by the University of London International Programme. We're starting with one, two, and three year undergraduate programs in International Business Leadership, and will expand to other disciplines and levels going forward.

One note: there's no connection with Ascension Island. We use a .ac domain because it's the closest thing there is to a global top level domain for higher education, particularly one recognizable in Commonwealth countries. But that doesn't imply a connection there any more than CBSNews.tv implies that network is based on Tuvalu.

So that's the quick answer. I expect once we reach another significant milestone we may announce it, especially once we're through the accreditation gauntlet.

Better than you think since I didn't know about it either.

Personally, I support these type of endeavors and I wish you well (assuming you get accreditation). What I find bothersome, however, is that there are people posting on the forum with hidden agendas. I guess it's a fine line between leaving the appearance that one is "shilling" and vs the appearance one is hiding something. All I can say is that I treat commentary differently when I know the person who is speaking it as a commercial interest in the debate.

Are you, Randall, and the other faculty going to put your names and credentials on the website?

Thanks, Jumbodog. And what you say is fair. But I think since Randell and I have a public history of commentary on these issues that long predates this project that it's clear that we're doing this because of what we believe, and not the reverse.

On accreditation, I expect we'll overhaul the site design and if so I expect that it will include faculty and staff profiles.

So we give this school a pass because someone claims it? Okay, good to know.

I have been on the board since 2001 and I got involved in this project about 2 years ago. No hidden agenda here. Since many on this board are involved in academia in some fashion I guess most commentary should be treated "differently".

A pass on what? Do you see or do you have a substantive critique of the school?

Steve and Randell have sat very high standards for themselves and we should expect nothing less for NWU. The bringing of high quality accredited affordable education to less developed countries should be applauded and supported. The mission of NWU is inspirational. Degreeinfo has a wealth of knowledge; I hope all the Phds and MBAs etc on Degreeinfo can donate their time and expertise to Steve and Randell to make their project a success.

Uh hu, and just how many schools can someone be the CAO for I wonder? Seems fishy to hide your name on the school website to me .. but that is just me I guess..
