Hello everyone! I have recently decided to try my hand at teaching online. I have a B.A. in English from San Diego State University and a Master's in Business Administration from University of Phoenix. I am also currently attending Pacifica Graduate Institute. I will have a second Master's in Mythological Studies with an emphasis in Depth Psychology at the end of this coming summer and a Ph.D. to follow when I finish my dissertation in 2012.

I have two years of teaching experience (plus an additional year as a student teacher) at the middle school and high school levels. I have worked as a non-contracted teacher for public schools in various English and Literature related courses. I also have a California Single Subject Teaching Credential in English.

I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on venturing into college instruction, especially online. What course would I be able to teach? What schools should I apply to that would be appropriate for a newer college level teacher? Any help and advice would be very appreciated.

    Thank you!

While I can't help you with online instruction (I'm trying to get into that myself) I would love to know where you obtained a masters in mythological studies. Was that online? The only thing I've been able to find is a masters in classics.

    Thanks,
    Matt

This might be a good time for Tony Pina's old post on getting hired as a professor. If Tony himself doesn't show up, maybe someone could resurrect his old post.

Here www.pacifica.edu/mythology.aspx is the weblink for the MA/PhD in Mythological Studies at Pacifica Graduate Institute. They are accredited by the Western Association.

First, I wish I was close to Pacifica. That program looks awesome... right up my alley.

As for the classics program, it's through the University of Florida. http://web.classics.ufl.edu/distance/distance.html

I'm hoping that a masters in ancient history would qualify for their PhD in Classical Civilization, but if not, I wouldn't mind going for another masters. Why not... I'm young. (I think!)

Where are you thinking about doing the master's in ancient history?

I'm looking at APU after I finish the WNMU program. I'm wondering if APU will take any of the credits from WNMU if they are conferred with the degree?

(Gosh... I feel guilty. I kinda hijacked this post.)

I was of the impression that Pacifica's programs are either online or short residency.

The mythological program is like a weekend program or something. http://www.pacifica.edu/innerContentabout.aspx?id=2882

The Humanities program seems to be online.

    Matt,

I love the program at Pacifica. The professors are great and the classes were exactly what I was looking for. Most people come from out of state though... We have people fly in from Canada, Colorado, Texas, Kentucky... If you are interested, you should have the school send you an information packet.

The Humanities program is online but the Mythology program is not. Class sessions are held once a month for three days at a time (for that program it is a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday). Housing for the three days you are there is included. If you have any questions about Pacifica or the classes, just let me know. I am half way through my second year now.
