First off, this isn't an attack and I appreciate everything the moderators do around here. This is just an observation from a concerned citizen that enjoys coming here to read and discuss with others.

I know it is a thankless and difficult job, especially with the amount of new users and onslaught of spam this site gets daily. It seems as if many of the moderation team have moved on or are otherwise engaged in other activities that prevent them from routine monitoring of the site. Randell hasn't been here in over two years, SurfDoctor hasn't been here in two years, Airtorn hasn't been here since January, Kizmet just announced a partial leave of absence, others just seem to be here infrequently. Bruce appears to be here regularly and I see that Maniac was here on Monday. Maybe there are many other moderators that I am unaware of or have forgotten about that are just so overwhelmed they can't handle all of the requests; it just appears the site is undermanned at this moment in time.

It also appears there isn't a lot of moderation that fits the evenings on the West Coast because every evening the "latest threads" becomes unusable due to the spam, similar to how it is right at this moment due to all of the WhatsApp spam.

These all appear to be spambots and I'm seeing the same spam on other boards.

I'd suggest that the moderators go back to the old policy with new participants (can't always call them people) registering on the board, requiring a moderator to look at their first post(s) before they go up. That would stop all the spambots right there.

I realize that might deter new members and that's undeniably bad. But so are the spam waves that result when that policy isn't in place and the moderators aren't around.

Ideally, the best way is to have moderators here frequently enough to keep the board clean while still letting new members (the real ones) post. But that places a heavy burden on the moderators.

All sound good to me. The goal would be to have moderators in different areas of the world, that are interested/engaged in the subject matter, and naturally come here as they carry out their day because they want to, not just to moderate. I think we had that in the past and it seems many of the ones chosen to be moderators moved on to other endeavors and there hasn't been any new selections to fill the voids.

It makes me appreciate Kizmet (despite her atrocious politics :D ) who must have been putting lots of work into keeping the board looking good. It will be unfortunate if there's nobody else around often enough to fill her role while she's taking a break.

Ted, when I went to check each of the moderators last log in I saw a post to Chip where you had stated you were looking to take a break. It was a while ago but I didn’t know if that was still the case or not.

These spams are messing with my enjoyment. Maybe there could be a few volunteers below moderators status who can do spam patrols

If the goal of the spam is to drive traffic away it is working.

Kizmet, your absence is immediately noticed. I think it best to sacrifice whatever personal happiness you were seeking for the rest of our collective mental health. We will compensate you with post likes and accolades.
