Incoming Representative George Santos (R-NY) seems to have lied regarding just about everything in his background, including: Degrees from Baruch College and NYU Working at Goldman Sachs and Citigroup His own charity His own business His Jewish heritage His grandparents escaping the Holocaust He also failed to disclosed legal troubles in his home country of Brazil. He also failed to disclose his marriage and divorce from a woman, despite claiming he was gay and married to a man. Plus two eviction actions against him in 2017 and 2019. He has yet to deny--or even to comment on--these and other accusations. His lawyer thrashed the source--the New York Times--but didn't deny anything. Santos has promised to address it next week. Such fun!
In a statement today he admitted that he never attended any institution of higher education, and that there might have been some errors of "language" regarding his background. But he said he was going to take his seat in the House next week. Once he's there, it would take a 2/3 majority vote to oust him. Since he's only the latest scoundrel in the current House, I would think he isn't going anywhere. Besides, there's a certain Speaker-wannabe that desperately needs his vote and Santos has already pledged it. So, welcome aboard, Congressman!
You absolutely nailed the real reason that he need not fear being seated. I find the whole thing very amusing. Any guesses at how many roll calls it will take to seat our next speaker? I'll guess either one or over 2 dozen.
It's clear now that George Santos: Never earned degrees he claimed Never worked at Goldman Sachs or Citigroup Is not Jewish Gee -- can we still believe him when he says he's gay? Additionally, Mr. Santos is facing revived charges re: fraud in Brazil. (2008 - he's accused of writing $700 worth of cheques on a stolen chequebook, under a false name.) Brazilian police revived the charges because now they have a place to serve them - since Mr. Santos has been elected, they know where he works.
