Interesting article and interesting times, too bad I want the government to work. Otherwise I'd find it all much more amusing. :D

Jeffries comes up 12 votes on "Gym" Jordan in the first vote for Speaker. Another vote is planned for later today. I suspect despite the specifics of who votes for who changing, that he [Jordan] will have the same amount of support on the next vote, or possibly a couple votes less.

It was reported that some Republicans were floating the idea of Rich's #6
    6. Nothing changes and we hobble down the road to the 2024 elections with a crippled House.

Or at least empowering the Speaker Pro Tem to perform more functions which would likely lead to #6 unless torpedoed by the courts.

I'm a little surprised that they're holding floor votes--which are a matter of record. I think Gym is trying to pressure the holdouts, since he and Right Wing media have gone on a campaign to identify them wherever possible. (Including posting their office numbers so they can be inundated with phone calls.)

The only difference here is that Gym is a member of the band of crazies. It's not clear if his opposition is as strong as was the crazies' resistance to McCarthy.

In the mean time, the Democrats continue to remain solidly behind their senior person, united in their votes for Jeffries. If Republicans would have similar solidarity, we wouldn't be going through this. Of course, that was true back in January, too.

    Different clown. Same circus.

GOP clowns are all the same.

Well, maybe the mists are starting to clear. McHenry might get some expanded authority to carry on. The GOP House membership will likely not agree to elect anyone as Speaker before the next election.

    The very definition of nihilism.

Gosh, who could have predicted that?

As of 12:45 Eastern, Gym is going down to defeat again, having already lost more votes than he can afford.

I can't believe they're doing this in public. Gym thinks he can shame people into supporting him, but it's not working. Instead, the GOP looks more and more feckless with each passing day.

Yes and I can’t help thinking the Democrats are happy to sit back and watch.

OTOH...maybe the House GOP is starting to look with clearer eyes. Trumpism is over?

Trumps power comes from the MAGA base. Most elected Republicans have always been just tolerant of him. They are just afraid of the MAGA base. The MAGA base still supports him, unfortunately.

200 on the first vote, 199 on the second.

    Edit:
2 reps who supported other candidates on the first ballot switched their support to Jordan.
4 reps who supported Jordan on the first ballot switched to other candidates.
And Gus Bilirakis (FL-12) was absent on the first vote but cast one for Jordan on the second.

Yeah...disregard my last post. I was dreaming of a better world.

Yet again, the person who got the most ballots for Speaker was...Hakeem Jeffries.

For those Republicans out there wanting to blame Democrats, note that your guy can't even get more votes than theirs.

Well, Gym's out. Now they're talking about empowering the pro tem guy. They're going to need the Democrats to get that done, too, I suspect.

Because you don't think the whole Republican caucus will eventually accept that compromise, or because that sort of rules change would require a supermajority?

It only takes a majority vote to change the rules, but the same division among Republicans that prevents them from getting to 217 for Speaker will likely prevent them from voting for the rule change.

Edit: The Republicans should be taking a lot of heat for this mess and I'm miffed that they're not being blamed. In November when the government shuts down, it is in every way a Republican shutdown but I suspect they'll find a way to blame it on the Democrats, somehow.

They won't need any rational explanation. The Republicans will just blame it on the Democrats without any rational. At least that has been their MO lately.
