The term predates Spike Lee by years. Mr. Lee brought people's attention to the term and voiced his personal disapproval of such characters being written into movies. He added there was an emerging new "Supermagical Negro" character in movies - e.g. the Green Mile - and that he also disapproved of such interpretation.

The song "Barack the Magic Negro" was written by songwriter and satirist Paul Shanklin for Limbaugh's show. The title came from "Puff the Magic Dragon," not the long standing film character Mr. Lee objected to.

Glad to know you wish Ms. Fluke well. So do I.

    No it isn't. https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/Uncle Tom

1 disparaging : a Black person who is overeager to win the approval of whites (as by obsequious behavior or uncritical acceptance of white values and goals)

2 disparaging : a person who is overly subservient to or cooperative with authority. "...the worst floor managers and supervisors by far are women … Some of them are regular Uncle Toms..." — Jane Fonda

And it's Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, not Thompson.

Plenty of us read and understood the whole "Jack of all Trades discussion." We don't need your um... "help."
Won't be seeing your meme. Don't need to get ready.

Is there another Distance Education Forum? I'm approaching six years post brain surgery. Ido remember interacting with many of you in Gus Sainz,'s board for some time time. I remember the Batshit Crazy Boards. The focus was too often hating on John Bear and Dr. Dr. Douglas, plus saying evil things about Mark Israel. I do on rare occasion post on Free Republic but, it's hardly a conversation when we all begin bobbing our heads. <3

Yes, Charles - the other active board is degreeforum.net . Several of us post on both boards - including me. The BatS#*! board is still there - hardly alive. I'm sure you can find it. Degreediscussion was torpedoed in 2013. It's off the air. Degreeboard was sold and the forum was discontinued by the new owner. There was another, degree-something, I forget, that was headquartered in Vanuatu - I've forgotten the name, but I believe it's long-since abandoned. I was a poster on all but the BatS#*! board

I'm sure that many folks would consider Uncle Tom a compliment. Folks like Donald Trump and other white nationals I'm sure would consider Uncle Tom a great compliment.

Thank you. I consider most of you my distance education colleagues. I initially arrived here around 2000. Sometimes I wonder what ever happened to the OGs like Tom Head and Jimmy Clifton. Last I remember - Dr. Dr. Dr. Dr. Clifton decided to join the Bahai Faith. It fascinated me, as the Bahai Faith doesn't have a clergy. Perhaps the best mentor I ever had is a Bahai. He saved me from self-destructing on my first twodeployments. Of

Yes, Bill. I get your point. I'm sure those folks get a warm glow when they're called "Uncle Tom" as a compliment on their efforts to win approval - from their own kind. I think we can still agree - it's not complimentary to a Black person, thought to be overeager to please Whites, or a person of any color who is thought to be overeager to please authority figures in general. Right?

Thank you,! Ironically,I do have a tenuous Vanuatu connection. Each year the Washington Nationals Baseball team has a Peace Corps Night. Peace Corps Returned Volunteers as nd employees represent their countries on the field by holding the flag of their host country. As a fan of Vice Admiral/PM Bainimarama, and events of a December 5, expert, I grabbed the Flag of Fiji. However, a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer who served in FiJi asked me to swap flags. So, I of course surrended my Fiji Flag. So, I stood on the field of RFK Stadium holding the Flag of Vanuatu.

The Story of Josiah Henson, the Real Inspiration for ‘Uncle Tom’s Cabin’

    https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/story-josiah-henson-real-inspiration-uncle-toms-cabin-180969094/

I knew it was a matter of time till Trump's name was mentioned. When they mention Trump being racist, they often pull up his quote talking about the Charlottesville event, which is a lie. If you had read the complete transcript, you would know this.

But we forget our history that Joe Biden, on July 2, 2010, gave a eulogy for the Head Cyclop KKK clan member Robert Byrd. Biden said, "He was a friend, and he was a mentor, and he was a guide. (referring to KKK member Robert Byrd)

When campaigning out of his basement in 2020 for president, Joe Biden said, "If you have a problem figuring out whether you’re for me or Trump, then you ain’t black." Implying blacks aren't allowed to think for themselves which is an extremely racist remark.

Biden has a long history of racist comments he has made.

Joe Biden's approval rating recently dipped below 30%. (Black approval is now 56% and dropping like a rock. Was at 90%)

If people had listened to Bill Marr (Someone I like), they wouldn't be in this mess. He is still (barely) a proud Democrat and has been screaming at the top of his lungs for Democrats to drop these woke progressive ideologies before they destroy the Democrat party.

Dr. Clifton chose to retire from this Board, some years ago. He was a long-time Degreediscussion member, too. And yes, he was very interested in the Baha'i Faith. At one time he also had some interest in Christian Science. He retained his position as a pastor, though, at the same church where (I think) he has served for many years. I happened by accident on the Church's news page some time ago. They mentioned an event from which Pastor Jimmy was absent, due to illness. I hope he's better.

Tom Head is a name I know only by mention from others. His tenure was before my time - I started here in 2007, as a fresh-faced young whippersnapper of 64.

I remember on Degreediscussion, Dr. Clifton used to give us occasional updates on a distance course (snail-mail) in Locksmithing that he was taking from the Foley-Belsaw Institute. I think he enjoyed that one a lot. Our long-time friend, the late Ted Heiks, once referred to Rev. Jimmy as "the Degree-gettin'est, Locksmithin'est Preacher ever." Ted got a lot of things right. That was certainly one. He'll be missed for a long, long time.

I also started that course, though I didn't finish it. It was very enjoyable. If you finished the whole thing they would send you a key cutting machine.

It's what sparked a lifelong fascination with correspondence courses. Something special about getting a pack of tools and a coursebook in the mail, versus logging into a digital course.

It's not complimentary to a black person. What I was trying to say is that I can imagine a racist using the term as a compliment to a black person though. If the racist thought a black person was acting the way the racist thought was good as the black person bowed to the racist's demands.

I've read the complete transcript and taking this in the context of Trump's other statements and behavior, he's clearly a racist. His father was a KKK member. Trump treated minorities in a racist manner and had to pay a fine because of it, as another example.

True enough, I guess, Bill. The whole scenario, though, is appalling to me, but that's not your fault, of course. The mere thought of two people interacting in this manner is "low down, mind-messin' steadily depressin'," to borrow Jim Croce's words. I can't deny it probably happens - but I hope never to witness it. I like to focus on positive inter-racial activities, dialogue and relationships. And there is, thankfully, plenty there too choose from, I find.
    Hell, yeah! All of it.

I should add - I can imagine a Black person - or someone from any race - responding to demands of subservience, if they thought a bunch of racists (or even one big 'un) might do them physical - even possibly fatal harm, if they didn't comply. I see nothing wrong with preserving one's life or well-being at the temporary cost of dignity. They certainly wouldn't lose any dignity in my eyes for doing so. And if someone is forced to choose "Uncle Tom" behaviour by fear of force - well hell, that's as depressing as it gets. A person who would inflict that subservience on someone, because of race - or gender - or orientation - doesn't deserve a place on the same planet.

And I forgot. It's race, gender, orientation, ethnicity and religion. Proper humans don't discriminate on ANY of the preceding. Hell NO! They just DON'T!

Yes, Dustin. the good career schools do all that. The low-end ones just give you books and ticky-box tests. My fashion-design course was like that. Funny how that went. I originally took the course so I could "think like" a woman who is a recurring character in stories I write. She's a fascinating and very cerebral person; her business is at the nexus of fashion and finance. She has expertise in both and I could write the finance part pretty convincingly, but I wasn't satisfied that i could depict her thinking on the fashion end well enough. So I signed up for fashion design.

Then it happened - I got completely caught up with the beauty, art and science that is fashion --- and I wanted to make clothes. The course didn't give me that - but it's OK. Very friendly sewing machine, makers' needs and fabric stores here. They have everything. And the cost wasn't ruinous - at all. The school? At least the texts were good - and they led me to other reading. By that time, I knew what I wanted to do - where to get equipped - and where to learn more. So I managed to get something out of a not-great school, anyway. ... But they won't see me again.

    @Rachel83az - Yes, pockets. Pockets everywhere. I won't forget. :)
