Funny story; many years ago, I had a case at the Dorchester (part of Boston) Gun & Drug Court (DGDC), and the defendant had a public defender. In Massachusetts, there isn't an official public defender's office, private lawyers apply to be put on the approved list, then go to district courts for arraignments, where they get assigned clients who need a lawyer.

Back then, the DGDC handled all gun & drug cases in Boston that were serious enough to be taken out of district courts, but not serious enough for a full-blown superior court indictment, so it was always crazy busy. My trial went into the afternoon, so the judge recessed for lunch, and knowing the area, I made a beeline to the nearby KFC before the crowd arrived. I had just started eating when I noticed the public defender for my case walking around with his tray, looking for a seat. I waved him over and invited him to join me, and we both tried telling each other at the same time that we couldn't discuss the case.

He was a good guy, we had an interesting discussion during lunch; he told me that when he graduated from the New England School of Law (very respectable ABA-accredited independent law school in Boston), he was working part-time as a waiter for one of the 5-star hotels in Boston. He had taken the bar exam, and was just waiting for the results (he passed). One night he was serving food and drinks to second-year Harvard Law students who were being courted for internships by big shots from prestigious law firms. He saw the irony that he was serving people younger than him, who hadn't even graduated law school, working for tips while they were being offered insane salaries to be interns. I said "Welcome to academic snobbery". He laughed and said "no shit, huh?"
