And to intertwine two parts of this thread . . when the founder of La Salle (Louisiana) pleaded guilty and went to federal prison, he immediately started his next diploma mill from his prison cell. He called it Edison University. The real Edison got a restraining order, so he changed it to Addison University. The real Edison went back to court and the judge agreed that was too close, so the fake was renamed Acton University, and thus it remained.

Despite regular reminders from self and others, the University of California at Berkeley did nothing about the fake Berkley University in Michigan and elsewhere for more than five years, during which time millions of dollars worth of fake Berkley degrees were sold. Bah.

John Bear: The fake was named Acton.

    Decimon: Good Lord!

Ted Heiks: Well, Lord Acton a good book on philosophy of history, so maybe he was a good lord.

He's referring to Lord Acton's (arguably) most famous quote, look it up, you'll immediately say "Oh, of course."
