Are you saying that Capella is superior to NCU or JIU?

I agree that 50K is too much for a DBA that can only get you in schools like Devry or community colleges, but some people just get the money from an employer so the price might not be an issue for them. In addition, JUI is just testing the market, they will have to drop the price as they see that the market is not willing to pay this amount.

Keep in mind that while the University of Maryland University College (UMUC) is part of the University System of Maryland, it is not the same as earning a degree from the University of Maryland, College Park. If you are looking for the University of Maryland name, then you need to look at the University of Maryland, College Park. IMO, UMUC is way overpriced considering the mediocre reputation they have in Maryland.

In fact, the following universities belong to the University System of Maryland. None have the name recognition like that of the University of Maryland, College Park.

    University of Maryland, Baltimore
    University of Maryland, Baltimore County
    University of Maryland, College Park
    University of Maryland Eastern Shore
    University of Maryland University College

I've been following this thread and contacted UMUC to get more info on the DM degree. It sounds like a good program but it is definitely pricey which would be the big downside. The advisor I contacted indicated that starting next year they are going to allow new students to matriculate four times per year. The residency requirement is also pretty extensive you have to travel to Maryland four times per year while in the course work phase of the degree program. This degree program with the travel would probably be close to 50,000 before it was all said and done. Their curriculum and specializations however do look interesting. This might be a program I consider if I don't get into Valdosta State's DPA program. That will probably be about a third of the cost which is the major part of its appeal.

Well it took me 4 years to find an accounting doctorate in the US with residency and all the good stuff!

Nova and NCU, were in the List but I like Argosy better!

Florida State Universities such as FIU and FAU change their regular MBA to an Executive one which is more expensive, I wanted to do MS in TAX but they wanted over $24K this is too way expensive for state university. I guess same issue, some people do not have problems with money or is not an issue!

I'm not sure how the DM is viewed in the corporate world but I'll try to take a stab at describing it. Imagine the PhD in a Business topic, the DBA, and the DM as existing along a continuum. The PhD in a Business topic is a very narrowly specialized degree with all of your coursework in one area (PhD in Finance, PhD in Marketing, PhD in Human Resource Management, etc.) and culminates in a highly theoretical dissertation that makes some sort of original contribution to the field. This is intended to prepare future professors. The DBA was originally designed as a broad exposure to all business sub-disciplines that culminates in a dissertation that applies theoretical knowledge to a practical problem. This is intended to prepare future executives. Originally, it would have been inconceivable to have DBAs with concentrations (DBA in Accounting, DBA in Information Technology, DBA in Human Resource Management, etc.). Not only that, according to our very dear friend Andy Borchers, there are some DBA programs, like Nova Southeastern University, where the DBA dissertation is theoretical (like a PhD) rather than applied (like a DBA). So, it seems that the distinctions between a PhD in Business and a DBA are collapsing. The DM appears to be a restoration of the practical applied doctorate that the DBA was originally intended to be.

Vini, have you looked at the Taft DETC MST?

I don't blame you one bit. It will most likely come down to one of the three:

    1. I stay based in South Florida and attend NSU since the main campus is there.

    2. Make Orlando my base and home. Then Argosy will most likely be the route I go.

    3. Come to my senses, give up on the idea of a doctorate and buy a small RV. Drive up I-75, wave at the University of Florida as I pass by, and have fun!

Right now #3 sounds real good!!

Thanks Ted. I read somewhere that the accrediting agencies consider the DBA and PhD to be equal. I would guess that the DM is also?

Actually, I won't do it with them, for some reason I don't like them. I would rather do it with FAU. But I am looking forward to a new employer(soon), so they can pick for my tax training.

Yes, I vaguely remember reading that list put out by the accreditors (or possibly by USDOE or CHEA) of doctoral titles which it considers equal. The meaning, I think, was that it considered them to be all equally legitimate earned doctoral titles (even if some were geared towards different functions, like research-oriented doctorates and professional doctorates) and both the PhD and the DBA were on the list. I don't recall the DM being on the list when it first came out, but that was likely because there were so few DM programs available at the time that the compilers of that list simply didn't know of the existence of the DM degree. Hopefully, this has changed (or will change in the very near future).

As you, I try to come to my senses and save the money for something else, but I could not stay away, because this inner voice was bothering< Go a head finish your DBA Accounting, your're not done> well today the voice is gone, but I am in hell. (but I like it)

    Good afternoon!

The list of research doctorate programs from the U.S. Department of Education can be seen at http://www.ed.gov/about/offices/list/ous/international/usnei/us/edlite-research-doctorate.html on the web. Programs range from Doctor of Social Science to Doctor of Engineering, but Doctor of Management is not listed.

    Have a nice day!

I'd like to hear your reservations about the Taft DETC MST; at approx. $9,000, it looks like a very reasonably-priced program. I'll bet Florida Atlantic's RA MS is three times as much.

The FAU program can be also taking on cumpus which will be cheaper than Taft, but is not online and I can get 6 credits waive every semester(free), but I don't see my self driving that far. If I go with TAFT it will be out of my pocket and their pymt plan are not to attractive. That come to my third option if everything goes well, I will be trained for taxes. I won't have the need to do a master in taxes. I will PM u.

    That's true.

While I agree that it costs a lot (too much, even), I disagree that its reputation around here is mediocre. No, it's not Georgetown, but it's perfectly serviceable, and since UMCP doesn't do distance....
