I think the same thing is happening with the rapid (rabid?) expansion of newly-licensed marijuana stores in Ontario, that are appearing on just about every corner, since our Premier Doug Ford smelled the money (or the dope) and went on a HUGE licensing kick. "Saturation is at hand and shakeout shall surely follow," saith the Johann. Wonder who the Tim's of Weed will be? Maybe there'll be a chain called Buds? Meanwhile, unlicensed dealers are still making their daily deliveries. Where I live, they're as regular as the postman.
I'm not one to automatically assume the free market can solve an issue, but I don't really understand the cannabis and alcohol monopolies in Ontario, unless it's explicitly for tax/revenue-generating reasons. Living in the US where I can get beer or liquor at the gas station when needed, I appreciate the convenience.
Then you understand it completely. That's it exactly. Most of alcohol price is tax, here. And I kept that in mind, for encouragement, when I quit drinking altogether, years ago. I have every penny of those taxes I didn't pay, invested or saved now - and it's a tidy sum. Well worth the small effort then. No effort at all, now. And we're hit for enough tax at the gas stations as it is. So I gave my last car to my son in 1998. Premier Ford hasn't figured how to tax walking yet. If he does - just for him, I'm willing to crawl. I despise that man.
Well, there's one thing you can do about it, that will fix the problem entirely, Steve. See my post 63 above.
I guess we just ran out of things to say about the program, or the late Mr. Welch. If you have anything you want to add, we know our place. The floor is yours, Vicki....
No tax, but the Province does offer an optional 'license to walk' for those who don't want to keep up their driving privileges. It costs half the value of a driver's license. I'll get mine when I turn 80 next year; I haven't owned a car in 23 years and keeping a license once you're 80 is like being an alcoholic - you have to go to meetings. Mainly to make sure you've still got your marbles and can see OK to drive. The "license to walk" (I don't know the official name) is not compulsory and it has some value. It's good-as-gold Government issued ID, useful in many circumstances, just like a driver's license. So I don't mind paying something for it. And next year the buses will be free for me, so...
I had an Ontario Photo ID (the official name, but I love the name "license to walk", never heard that before!) because a confluence of factors led me to not have my driver's license. When I moved to Iowa the first thing I did when eligible was get my learner's permit and get into Driver's Ed.
Hmm. Maybe I should try Iowa.... I used to listen to KXEL 1540 in Waterloo, Iowa as a young kid. Hundreds of miles away - came in clear as a bell. And a station in Cedar Rapids IA as well. In my teens it was either "The Hound" at WINE in Buffalo NY (quite near) or Big John R. (Richbourg) at WLAC in Nashville TN. (Also far, far away, but clear at night.) Them was the days. Oh looky, thread derailleur again! Dang!
