If you hit the lottery and were now rich, what would you do with your education?

  1. I would finish my degree immediately and keep going for other degrees after that, with no pause.

    44.1%
  2. I would finish the degree I'm working on and then quit to enjoy the good life.

    32.4%
  3. I would take a few years off to bask in my wealth and then I would start up my education again.

    8.8%
  4. I would bail on the education tomorrow. I would have no need for it at that point.

    5.9%
  5. I have a different answer, please see my post below.

    8.8%

Do you really have to work with that many people who are jerks? That's terrible. I have a feeling that if you were suddenly a multi-millionaire, all of those people would suddenly be so very nice to you. It wouldn't be genuine, but I'll bet they would suck up big time.

I would continue to work for a degree. But at the same time I would build 333-1/3 metre indooor velodrome and sponsor a racing team.

Bruce, I gather that you are in law enforcement, is that correct? If so, I'll bet you see the worst side of people and I can understand how you would feel that way. Police officers are treated poorly and disrespected in our society, ticks me off. We owe law enforcement so much and yet fail to realize it or express our thanks.

I would think about moving to some northern European country like Norway or Sweden. It would be beautiful up there.

Thank you, and I really mean that.

When I said I would tell everyone I encounter what I think of them, that was a bit misleading. I know the silent majority of citizens support and appreciate the police, it's just the mouthy/entitled welfare state majority that pisses me off, and not surprisingly, those are the people who most often call the police, so those are the ones I would most likely have to deal with during my "final shift".

$54 million will pay for a lot of grad school.

For the person who said that they would bail on the education tomorrow as they would no longer have any need of it: you might consider a class on personal finance. Most lottery winners are idiots who waste the money and end up just as broke as before.

And it would also help if you needed to "grease the wheels" via a generous donation to get into a program...

Hmmm, I have halted my progress, and decided against the Ph.D. So, I guess I didn't need a lottery win. I still study everything that interests me, but without the elaborate hazing, and initiation rituals involved in some of these programs. Did my time with that stuff. :)

I think that part of the hazing is intentional, part of it is disorganization and poor management on the part of the universities. For those of you with non-US doctorates, what say you?

Well, I have already finished my Ph.D. but if I had won a large sum in the lottery before finishing, I still would have finished it. I am the type that almost always finishes what I start.

Lottery or no lottery, I have no specific intentions of formally continuing with education. I am always learning though and I can not say for sure whether I might enroll in college courses in the future. I am not one to enroll just because I love college courses. I always have some sort of goal for a degree or career advancement when I have enrolled in the past. If I want to learn just for the sake of learning, I realize there are many free or inexpensive ways to do that, and it is less stressful to learn in that way.

I assume that you are not talking about online classes when you mention hazing. If you are, how is hazing in an online school accomplished? I have actually heard of a frat organized around Capella, I don't get that one either.

I think that he means academic hazing - the going back and forth between chairperson and the OAR, the re-do's, the dropping out of the committee members, the changing of rules and process mid stream, the constant raising of tuition and so on.
