But am I the only one that finds Word to be clumsy, overly complex, unintuitive, and generally user surly? I finally replaced my ancient Dell home computer (not upgradable from XP Pro) with this cigar box sized machine that works wonderfully well and cost maybe $300 brand new. The new machine came with no word processor installed. I loaded Open Office which is free, resident, and slightly easier to use than Word. (Shed a tear for defunct WordPerfect, the best thing since WordStar.) But the world, including my workplace, has joined the Borg. Resistance to MS Word is futile besides which Microsoft offers a free web based version of Office with all its demon spawn. So sheer practicality forces me into the cold, cold embrace of Bill Gates. Linux guy here. Libre Office. "Sworn to fun - loyal to none." Packed up Windows 3 years ago. No regrets. Used it since 1992. Then came 10. That was it.
WordStar (later WordPerfect) Harvard Graphics Lotus 1-2-3 Netscape Navigator That was my lineup back in the day. Microsoft and its monopolistic practices made all of them go away.
LibreOffice and MS Office sadly don't play nice with some "standard" document formats. There are definitely instances where you MUST use the same office product or else the recipient won't be able to read the document(s) correctly.
I am right there with you! I designed my resume in InDesign. I have someone willing to help me with my law school application but the deal is that I have to put my resume into MS Word... which also means it's not going to look the same. I would be perfectly happy for this person to just print out my resume and PDF and mark off on a printed version what should be changed, but I cannot seem to convince the person to do that. I can use Ms Word but when it comes down to it it is a creativity killer. Even if I put everything in and make it look the same way it does on my current résumé, I know the person who would be reviewing it would not probably be able to figure out how to deal with it. So, I totally agree it's not user friendly if only a small percentage of people can really figure out how to use it and even those of us that can get frustrated with it.
