Can The Humanities Departments Survive Budget Cuts?

“The state auditor of Mississippi recently released an eight-page report suggesting that the state should invest more in college degree programs that could ‘improve the value they provide to both taxpayers and graduates.’

That means state appropriations should focus more on engineering and business programs, said , the auditor, and less on liberal arts majors like anthropology, women’s studies and German language and literature.

Those graduates not only learn less, White said, but they are also less likely to stay in Mississippi. More than 60% of anthropology graduates leave to find work, he said.”

    Dup. thread.

We had another thread on this. https://www.degreeinfo.com/index.php?threads/mississippi-auditor-says-taxpayers-shouldnt-be-paying-for-your-anthropology-degree.62463/#post-590091

I don't like this Shad White guy. He sees grads leaving, so he wants to set Mississippi back to the time long ago when nobody could leave. So he hoes in on Liberal Arts education. "Don't school 'um - an' then they cain't leave." Yikes!

I do like Tracy Chapman. She is not from Mississippi, (born in Cleveland OH) but she wrote some song lyrics that apply here:

"Give me one reason to stay here
And I'll turn right back around"

That's what Shad White should be looking into.

Sorry - that should be "hones in" or "homes in" - your choice. Dang the timer. Double-dang Shad White. Triple-dang my old glasses.

    Homes.

    Hone: To smooth or sharpen.

Home: To move or be aimed toward (a target or destination) with great accuracy.

These are both in common use, but I believe on the latter is accurate.

Similarly, "down the pike" means something that is coming soon. I still like "down the pipe" which is, while not technically the phrase I learned, also communicates the same idea.

The one I cannot stand is "I could care less," which completely negates the notion that the depth of one's ability to care has been met.

Unless "the pipe" happens to be the outflow pipe a porcelain convenience... :)

No, no. You misinterpret "I could care less". Think of it Yiddishly. Deadpan but with an ever so slight roll of the eyes. It means, as Yiddish so often does mean, the exact opposite of what it says. Translating: "What, you think I might have even the tiniest crumb of sympathy? You think I could care even less than I actually do?" Strong implication: "You're as mistaken as Korach."

Sorry, nosborne. I was responding to Dustin's post. I had no desire to start a controversy - just a rather lame joke. I think I was at work on the post when yours came in. I didn't see it till later. No reference to your post intended.

And yes - I should have kept my Yiddish wig on, anyway. Even though it's pretty thin and almost worn out. It was a factory defect I bought really cheap, from Seymour, the Wig Maven in 1959. Sentimental value. Seymour was a real mensch. :)

I hope someday that you realize, Johann, that ALL old men age into Yiddiosity!

Hm. Good name for a social media platform?
