Governor Stupid is now stringing concertina wire along the border with NEW Mexico. Apparently no one told him we're a state...

It's yet another taxpayer financed stunt that he knows full well won't survive two minutes in a federal court.

If performance politics--simple acts of stupidity for simply stupid people--didn't work, these politicians of a certain stripe wouldn't do it. But it does. So, they do.

First Nosborne, I must apologize to you. I was faced with a dilemma, here was a completely trustworthy poster, Nosborne, and he was claiming something so outlandish that it seemed unbelievable to me. So I checked, https://news.yahoo.com/gov-greg-abbott-lines-texas-230106029.html I was not surprised but felt guilty for even checking and so wrote this apology.

People are allowed to drive across the New Mexico/Texas border. Do they have to now show a passport or ID before entering Texas? Does this really sound like a good idea to the Republican base? Rich's logic seems completely sound but ... ??

Abbott's "bucket list" would be strange and fearsome reading. I suspect that's where he records these crazy ideas, then crosses them through one by one, as they get done.

It doesn't make any sense. (Except for the logic that Rich states.) If one just thinks about it for a few seconds, it doesn't make any sense. Razor wire is only effective in deterring humans if one of the following is true.

    1. They are not very motivated to go in the direction past the razor wire.
    2. They don't have a lot of time to get through the razor wire. Typically because people with guns are shooting at them while they are trying to get through or there are guards that will apprehend them while they are trying to get through.

I don't think either of those conditions are true in this case. If illegal aliens have crossed into the USA through New Mexico I don't think they want to go to Texas. The second condition is definitely false. With unlimited time to get through the razor wire I think even a couple of complete imbeciles wouldn't have much trouble getting past it. Now admittedly I've never tried to cross such an obstacle so please correct me if you know better. Although I have seen on TV illegal aliens getting through it without much difficulty on the Mexico Texas border.

The fault is mine. I ought to have provided a link.

Some time ago I decided that Gov. DeSantis was absolutely, terrifyingly, sincere. He really is a modern day Fascist with a heart full of hate and a desire to hurt helpless people for his own pleasure. (There is a rumor that he enjoyed watching torture sessions while in the Navy. I don't know if it's true but I can't say I'd be surprised.)

Gov. Abbott lacks the strength of character to be a truly dedicated monster. He's just bumbling and not very bright.

Frankly, I don't know which is worse.

The late unlamented Justice Scalia said in dicta that states retained the right to stop undocumented aliens from crossing their borders. Not sure where old Tony got that horseshit notion but there it is. A Justice mused aloud about an issue not before him. Not law folks. Just random muttering.

States DO have a right to stop and inspect to protect defined state interests. California does stop you and ask if you're carrying certain types of produce. But the question of nationality belongs solely to the federal government.

I don't see how Gov. Stupid's plan would work. Does he intend to stop every car, truck and bus coming into the Lone Star State and demand ID? Besides being a monumental undertaking it seems to me Arizona got slapped for trying something like that some years ago.

The ONLY way Stupid could do it is by racial profiling. Very Texan but also very illegal.

It's illegal in a lot of places. Did that ever put a stop to it? Why would it in Texas, of all places? If they think it'll work, they'll do it. With even less concern than they had for the concertina wire - or the death-buoys in the Rio Grande.

I take some comfort knowing that Texas has always been mean like this and the world hasn't ended because of it.
