Fake or Real Gas Price Inflation

I believe their is some truth to the fake gas price increases of the past. However, this one appears to be the consequence of destruction mixed with greedy oil business deals.

  5. Price gougers....

It is interesting how gas prices fluctuated so rapidly (as in INCREASED) immediately following Hurricane Katrina. I mean, it isn't like the oil / gas already in stock suddenly cost more - those companies already had it on hand for a much lower price. Although market forces eventually will make the product more expensive, it seems like gross profiteering on the part of the oil companies to IMMEDIATELY raise prices at the pump even though they paid so much less than that for the supply on hand.

On the other hand, when oil prices go down, those same oil companies aren't all that quick to pass on the "new reduced price" to us, claiming that their inventories were purchased at higher prices so we have to bear those costs as consumers....

    Yeah right.....

Just another example of where the federal government needs to do something fairly drastic to protect the public interests against rapacious profiteering on disasters by our corporate sector (in this case "big oil" - the Bush family specialty).

    Terminology

People need to realize that when you talk about gasoline prices you are not talking solely about the "oil companies". Our fuel system includes the crude suppliers (OPEC, etc.), the international wholesalers, the markets, the "Oil Companies", the refineries, distributors, and the inipendent gas station owner just to name a few. It is a gross simplification (usually to make a cheap political point) to label all of that "big oil", or "corporate interests" etc.

It takes months for the oil pumped out of the ground to actually reach your car so indeed the rising cost of crude should take a long time to reach your wallet. However, because players in the system are much closer to you (the local distributors and gas station owners) their increases will impact immediately. I know a gas chain owner personally and know that he for fact is taking heat for gas prices. Apparently, he don't care. He is making a ton of money. Guess what, he is a known Democrat in our local Democratic county.

The point of all of this is, if you want to blame someone for our most recent gouging you don't have to look any further than the owner of your local gas station. Prices went up and are dropping slightly back down in a period of time which is much shorter than the normal crude to fuel cycle. This tells you who is making the profit. Also, blame the press and your local petroleum retailer organizations. It is like clockwork, the rep calls the press to prediuct increasing gas prices. The press sensationalizes it and prices go up the next day after the stations get their cover.......

  7. Whew! what a relief!

God...! I feel SO much better now that you cleared it up for me.... It's those damned Democrats again responsible for those high oil prices..... since, as you said, "he don't care".... and he's a "known Democrat". (hmmm... the last time I heard something similar to that phrase was during the McCarthy era.... but..... oh well!)

For a few minutes there I thought it might have been the big oil companies and rich corporate robber-barons in this country who were responsible and getting all the profits. But now, thanks to you, I know it is the little guy - those nasty Democrat station owners - who are solely responsible for our suffering at the gas pump..... Just like it must be those damned local governments responsible for the bungled Katrina disaster response, not the huge and immensely capable Federal government.... Yes. It all is starting to come together now!

Clearly the solution to all of this is to eliminate the "little guys" so that the big corporations and federal government can take care of us, once all those "little guy Democrats" are out of the way....

Whew! I'll sleep better tonight with this new information - thanks again.

I decided to fill up my two spare 5 gallon cans a few weeks ago along with a full fill up on my F150 Supercrew. Wow - I had to put my CC in twice as the first $50 went fast. It cost me a full $78 for the fill up and 10 gallon spares.

I guess Christmas is going to be awful lean this year.

    We're in trouble, folks

Yes, and we are THE automobile society! We laid out our cities and transportation network based on individuals having private cars and USING them for essentially ALL transportation purposes. That's why San Francisco and Manhattan are such wonderful walking cities (pre auto, you see) whilst Los Angeles is IMPOSSIBLE without a car (post auto age). Mass transit is very hard to do in places like L.A. because the population is so diffuse.

I assisted at a bike tour on the labor day weekend in eastern Arizona. I have NEVER seen so few vacationers and tourists in that area on a three day weekend.

To drive to Silver City from Las Cruces and back now costs about $30.00 in gasoline alone. Out here in the West, our wide open spaces are proving to be isolating as well as beautiful.

    Re: Whew! what a relief!

Right on que. You blame republicans and "big oil" and when I point who is to blame you think I am blaming it on the democrats. You really are a clueless political hack. I hope you serve your governor better than you preach on this board. You are in dire need of an education on how the economy and our country work.

I have read at least 4 major news magaazines in the past week all of which put a big chunk of the blame on the state and local governments. USN&WR interviewed the NOLA emergency managment director and he said when asked why they didn't use the buses parked a couple of miles from the Superdome to evacuate people. He said, "it was never in our plan to evacuate people. They were supposed to use their transportation".MSNBC printed a report on what the NOLA levee board has been building other than levees. They have been gioving the governor's and the Mayor's relatives jobs and planning/building parks or casinos, not working on levee's. MSNBC also had a quote from a local sherrif who said yes, he had blocked the bridge to keep people from leaving NOLA. He said that was why his town wasn't looted and NOLA was.

Give me a break and go get educated before you come on here and spout any more of your childish drivel. I don't have time to educate the uneducatable....

Re: Re: Gas $3 a gallon by the end of year.

SUV's have been part of the American landscape for well over 10 years and during that time gas has at times been around $1 a gallon. One of the references in the article pointed to China. Sunday Morning had a guy on yesterday that pointed out that 10 years ago China was an oil exporter. Today, they are the second largest importing country after the USA. Actually, it is probably a combination of several things but China has been a huge factor just over the past couple of years when the prices have been leaping ever higher.

Re: Re: Re: Whew! what a relief!

Great debating skills. I post some facts, you focus on typo's. Why am I not surprised from someone totally unable to think out of the straight Democrat party line? You're such a follower. Go back to your liberal coffee clache and leave the real thinking and doing to those who can do it...

As is oft said on the Jerry Springer Show...... " you don' know me!!!"

May I advise that you learn to think outside the box a bit before automatically assuming that anyone with money and power is correct, even in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary.....

Also, how do you know I'm a Democrat? You may be surprised at my voting record over the past 10 years....

I also hate coffee houses and the slackers therein.....

Finally, there is NO excuse for typos (in particular on a board that extols the virtues of higher education at a distance).... shows a lack of concern for precision, and greatly diminishes the quality of your argument..... Makes all of us involved in DL look like second-rate academics....

    Biggest One Day Jump

Today, oil took the largest one day jump in history. However, it is not at the highest price because it did fall after hurricane Katrina.
