My state has an online Masters in Law from the state law school. I qualify for tuition free., so will give it shot this Fall if I can navigate the hoops.

Seniors in my state also get tax breaks and 5% discount at the grocery store on Thursdays and no one gets upset about that.

LOL sort of like those billions in student loans being waived by Executive order and paid back with taxpayer money.

I'm not convinced that "space available" is the same thing as unused capacity. Instructors still have to grade assignments, take time to explain points in class, and otherwise deal with a higher per-student overhead. Besides, "space available" is not a criterion in every program that lets seniors ride for free.

But forget all that. let's assume there really is excess capacity. In that case, it should go to low income students who really need it to improve their lives, not to seniors who are looking for something to do.

As opposed to the billions in subsidies that Elon Musk's companies get, which somehow don't inspire the same pearl clutching on the right.

How many of these spaces would be available if people of working age could afford these classes without going into debt?

The government makes a profit off of student loans.

https://www.gao.gov/products/gao-22-105365 according to this, over the last 25 years, direct student loans were projected to earn the US government $114 billion. Instead, it's COST $197 billion.

According to Google AI, private colleges and universities brought in $16 billion in annual revenue (2021, most recent year I could find). The average profit margin was 19.7% or $3.15 billion. I would be in favor of adding a tax to that subset of US universities equal to 5% of annual profit. In this example that would be $157 million. That revenue could be used toward tuition subsidies for our youth IF the youth chose a college with tuition no greater that the median in-state tuition in their state AND, those students passed their courses with a C+ or better AND the chosen degree was deemed "in need" in that state...or something similar. It's a drop in the bucket but every full bucket starts with a drop.

"The largest estimated cost increases—$102 billion in total—stemmed from emergency relief provided to most federal student loan borrowers under the CARES Act and related administrative actions in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This relief included suspending (1) all payments due, (2) interest accrual, and (3) involuntary collections for loans in default."

The government couldn't predict the pandemic and recent IDR changes. Up until that point, the government was profiting off of student loans. Because Trump is considering doing away with most IDR plans, student loans can go back to being profitable for the federal government again. He's also considering reversing loan forgiveness, but I don't know if he can do that.

Why does there need to be all these stipulations for young people but not old people?

Imagine thinking this is a bad thing and billions in loan forgiveness being waived for businesses and paid back with taxpayer money isnt.

Why not just stop giving corporations and billionaires massive tax breaks and use that to pay for education?

Young people spend way more, waste more, and are far less decisive. Having to work for things, expensive things, builds character. It creates value for the one who had to work for it. I can afford to buy my kids cars and houses. I don't, and I won't.

That's fine. We can stop using younger people's taxes to pay for people who are currently on Social Security. They should have had a 401k, 403b, or pension like a responsible adult.

Do you know which tax breaks you're referencing? I am not a major corporation but I do own a company of almost 400 employees. I receive tax breaks for hiring people in certain areas who live in under-employed, under-served areas. Do you want to take those? I received tax breaks for keeping all of my people employed during the pandemic when my competitors laid people off. Do you want to take those away? My company works with a razor thin staff. If I received additional tax breaks I would use the savings to hire more people because we need more people than our budget allows. Want to take that away as well?

I specified corporations and billionaires. Since you are neither of those then my comment doesnt apply to you.

Back in my day I had to walk 20 miles in the snow, up hill both ways, naked just to get to class.
