Former Vice President Mike Pence is poised to announce his run for presidential office on June 7 in Des Moines, Iowa, according to NPR. Quoting a source familiar with the campaign, NPR outlined that Pence will be making a tour through early voting states such as Iowa and New Hampshire — and announcing a Super PAC backing his bid for the presidency — in the coming days.

Pence joins at least nine other Republicans looking to overtake former President Donald Trump as the frontrunner in the nomination race. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley are other prominent figures to have entered the nomination contest. "

It will be interesting. My guess is that Mike Pence won't ever get out of the single digits when it comes to polling as well as voting.

So, the Republican primaries will be a three-way race between Skroob, Sandurz and Dark Helmet.

But do they have anyone who can beat Trump? The GOP needs to take back control from Trump. He has a baffling stranglehold over all of them. That psychopath shouldn’t have so much power.

Nasty thought -- but we might see how he runs things from a jail cell. It's been done... His power base contains a lot of people who are as low as he is -- but with little or no education. You can't make them any better than they are - or Trump any better than he is.

This is a problem that will outlast Trump by a long way.

I'm guessing Mike won't get much support from LGBTQ+ folks after his "curing" statements. A lot of straight people too, including me, can't stand him after those pronouncements. ( I couldn't, even before them.) I think Pence is as creepy as Trump, but in a far different way. You don't have to be orange and bloated to be creepy --- but it sometimes helps, I guess.

I can't think of a more irrelevant GOP candidate.

And yet, and yet...Pence might be about the best General Election candidate the GOP could offer.

I have to agree with the general sentiment but I like Niki Haley more than Mike Pence.

That's not saying all that much for Nikki, Bill --- but I get it. I read her story back when she was named Ambassador to United Nations by the Trump Administration. I remember reading what she had to say about growing up in S. Carolina - where, at the time, there were separate pageants for young White girls and young Black girls - but none for Nikki - or any South Asian girls. I felt that one!

Fact is - she's the only one in the contest I DO like!

It's all moot. None of these people can take Trump's place, especially while he's occupying it.

"Well, he could die .... couldn't he?" asked old Johann, hopefully.

He doesn't seem all that healthy and he's obviously under a lot of stress (some self-imposed), so something like a heart attack or stroke wouldn't be out of the question.

I just wonder what the MAGA people will do if/when that happens. A lot of them think that he's the second coming of Jesus. If he doesn't rise from the dead, will they go on (another) rampage and kill people for "suppressing the truth"?

That is not hyperbole. Trump really has been called the Second Coming.

As to his health, Trump doesn't smoke or drink alcohol. Those are by far the two biggest controllable factors for longevity.

Yes they are. And that's why I quit both. But Trump doesn't believe in exercise and eats cheeseburgers in bed. That should do it... shouldn't it?

Yes - a lot of people destroy their lives with alcohol. Moderate drinkers - not so much, apparently. Years ago, there was a careful, long-term study of moderate drinkers vs. non-drinkers in the UK. After many years, the study had to be terminated. Reason: All the non-drinkers had died.

IIRC, he's also suspicious of vegetables. He'll maybe eat ketchup (on a burger) but that's about it.

Well, that should certainly do it. Should have done it already, I'd have thought, but .. at least there's hope.
Unfortunately, I believe the possibility exists. I think America's greatest enemies are her own home-grown maniacs - excluding our own Mr. Craniac, of course. I just can't understand why there is such a huge number of them. They're not a fringe any more -- they're practically the whole damn mantle! Destruction from within -- a virus.
