This is a great post, I love little resume builders like this.

A strategy I’m using that takes even more advantage of the inexpensive nature of this, is that I’m alternating the tests from the Sacramento and Rutgers web sites, so I now have certificates from Rutgers in Software Testing, and California State University at Sacramento in Project management Fundamentals, … fun and cheap…

    DEL

Note: The Sacramento certificate does not have a signature on it, the Rutgers one does, I have e-mailed the contact e-mail provided on the web site to let them know…

We're all here to learn.....well....most of us anyway.

This is actually a great idea. I'll probably get one from each as well.

These certification sites are very useful pass-alongs to students, who are looking for ways to apply what we are teaching in the courses.

    Best wishes,

    Dave

Are there any other schools that offer the skill certification exams besides Rutgers and CSU-Sacramento.

I looked through that link the other day but was unable to find schools other than Rutgers and CSUS that are offering the same type of certification. However, my guess is that there must be others or there will be others in the future.

    FYI,

They might be offering it through another program 'cause when I looked at Boston University at ce.com it lists online certificate programs but I found it difficult to navigate to them on their site.

I must be a sucker for these quick fix programs, just wrote and paid for the "Business Math" test, wrote the "Workplace Computer Skills" test and will now end up finishing the "Project Management Skills Cert.".

My question is, "Would you be better off indicating in your profile just prior to taking the test, ........ that you are lacking experience, have a modest education and know little about the subject itself"? Would the test be easier for you under those conditions? (Just kidding!)

They are fun to do and don't take up much time but are they useful? Did anyone here complete the entire Certification and retrieve their official Certificate? Does it look any better than the individual test documents?

    Thanks in advance,

    I'm wondering the same thing.

Oh...btw...Gregg turned me onto http://camden-sbc.rutgers.edu/cme/online-business-management-training.htm which is a genuine "we mail you a certificate" Rutgers academic cert....and it's relatively inexpensive. about $1600 for the first $850 for the next and $750 for each after that. I took the sample course and it was pretty cool.

I spoke with the guy on the phone today and he said that these courses were ACE evaluated and they will issue a transcript and certificate upon completion of all coursework.

I just finished all 8 tests for the Project Manager Certification. made for an interesting day. I didn't bother filling out the profile after the first couple and went straight to the exams. It took me roughly 9 hours for all the tests. I did have to pull the PMBOK out for a couple of the PM questions but the remainder were fairly straight forward if you have some formal managerial and/or business background.

thanks for the link. Anybody decide how this should br portrayed on a resume? as individual certs for each exam or as a PM cert for a compilation?

I also took at a look at the high dollar offerings under the professional certifications :

    http://camden-sbc.rutgers.edu/cme/online-business-management-training.htm

and some of these classes are hosted by Thomson and offer PDUs/CEUs.

    Thanks again,

    Kevin

I would think that the skills cert would fall under "Professional Certs" on the resume and not "Education" since as far as I know they carry no academic weight. The more expensive cert with a transcript and ACE hours evaluated to it would probably be placed under "Education".

As for how they are listed, I would list the sum of all tests as 1 cert name.....kind of like a degree, where you don't list all of your classes. Perhaps you could mention a couple of key ones such as a "Skill Certificate in Business Management from Rutgers University. Areas studied such as Business Finance and Managerial Accounting." if you were applying to say a finance job.

  17. In my resume I typically list everything under "Education and Certifications" rather than break them out (as I don't have a lot of MS or other IT certs).

Assuming I finish the last two for the IT Management Professional certification (and then decide to actually pay for them ;) ) I would probably list it as "IT Management Professional Certification, Rutgers University". It'd be clear to anyone that it is a certification and not an academic degree.

    Cheers,
    Mark

    Hello FriendorFoe,

Here is another piece of interesting info should it not be on this site somewhere. Brainbench has a established relationship with Oklahoma State and can be found here. I completed the job role through them.

    http://www.okcareertech.org/certify/

    or here:

    http://www.brainbench.com/oklahomastate/viewpublictrans.jsp

This could be useful for some as well.

I am trying to study up to get a Human resources certificate through Rutgers that you reveiled.

Those are great. Got the one I wanted through CSUS.

I also want to complete the leadership certificate from either of the two as well. Tough questions and very thorough.

Hope the Oklahoma State info above could be useful to some.

Very cool. I used to take Brain Bench Certs alot, but people kept giving me funny looks or inquizitive comments when I would list "Brain Bench" on my resume....plus they started charging, then the cert expired after a given time, so I just quit doing them. The investment was not worth the payoff.

    I'm glad they are improving.

Umm...not quite. The relationship you say Brain Bench has with "Oklahoma State" does not refer to Oklahoma State University, but instead the State of Oklahoma. Big difference. CareerTech is administered by the Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education. Although that department is located in Stillwater, Oklahoma, it is NOT something which is run by Oklahoma State University. However, the program does work closely with the State Department of Education and operates on many different campuses statewide (including some juvenile detention facilities). For the most part, CareerTech is known as a program which is geared toward adult career training. It appears that Brainbench is simply the third-party testing company for the program.
