Watching C - SPAN. Honestly, I'm only aware Brittney Griner is an Olympic Gold Medalist and WNBA Superstar because the guest on C-SPAN is telling me. Ms. Grier is a prisoner in Russia. Ms. Griner is Black, Gay, and Nonconforming. I see the suggestion - she would not even have been in Russia had female athletes been paid as much as male athletes. Should WNBA Players be paid as much as NBA Players? The counter argument is - butts in seats. WNBA Games are not as watched asWNBA Games. I pray the U.S. does much more to get her home. I pray Ms. Griner is soon home

Yes, let's have equal pay for women and men meaning athletes all pool their money and split it evenly between the sexes. I would vote for that!

Let's see if the athlete SJWs are willing to sacrifice their own money. How do you like the meme I made?

The players control the unions. They can vote anytime they want for equality in pay and donate 1/2 their salaries to the women's league.

Speaking of equality, here is a trivia question for everyone but Steve since I got a feeling he might figure this one out.

    Trivia Question

List some of the occupations where women get paid more than 2 times what men make for equal work at the same job?

And yes, these occupations are real, I didn't make them up.

She makes $220K per season. That's definitely not LeBron money, but she didn't have to go either way.

I have been a Ronda Rousey fan for a long time and always will be. Here she is responding to the question of equal pay. I wonder does it matter? Futbol (soccer) and basketball are team sports. As a MMA fighter, Ronda Rousey was a headliner. She went one-on-one with her opponents. She presented a strong argument. Women's futbol and Women's basketball do not bring in the same revenue as men's basketball and futbol. I m all for every individual making as much as they can convince someone else to pay them. I pray for Ms.Griner's release.

    NBA revenue: 8.6 billion.

    WNBA revenue: 60 million.

Anyone who wants women to be paid more in basketball should be spending more money on women's basketball. Social issues aside, I'd suggest people consider doing so anyway. Even though I'm not a big basketball fan by any stretch, I find women's basketball more enjoyable when I do watch it. That's not the same for all sports (I'd rather watch men's baseball and football), but there are also plenty of sports that are equally entertaining, but in different ways, when played by either men or women. If you love sports like soccer, tennis, bowling, lacrosse, golf, disc golf and even judo, wrestling and MMA, you are REALLY missing out if you're not giving some of your attention to the women.

Having some newly acquired insight into the fashion industry, I suspected modeling. Yep. Supermodels have a huge gap. Old figures here, but in 2013, Gisele Bundchen made 31 times the pay of the highest-paid male supermodel - Sean O'Pry. $47 million for Gisele, $1.5 million for Sean. Big difference in the lesser ranks too - but not double. One of my fashion textbooks quoted a well-known modeling agent, whose rule-of-thumb is that a female model is not really successful if she makes less than $250K. (That one was on the exam, so I remembered it.)

https://fortune.com/2015/07/15/male-models-pay/#:~:text=The pay gap also extends, models in the coming years.

I saw another article (below) in which 34 jobs paid more to women -but the only two around double or more were Brick and Block masonry - about double to women, and Skin care specialists - about triple for women. Interestingly, female athletes and sports competitors are shown as making slightly more, on average than males. ???

"Oh, how a median can skew...."
I guess. I think the figures were about $59K ladies vs. $58K men. There are so many lists on this topic, I think anyone can find one to prove a desired point.

Yep, Johann got the trivia question correct. Another occupation is pipe layer if you know what I mean.

Ronda Rousey has Olympic judo skills. Her MMA fights are fun to watch.

The NBA was trying to grow the WNBA to bring in more viewers to bring them on par with the NFL.

I'll bite. Why did you think I might know this?

I’ll admit to not knowing who Griner was before this and also struggling to grasp a professional adult on a business trip - attempting to carry vaping stuff through customs in Russia.

I think many are struggling to understand that. I know that I am. It was a very stupid move.

She pleaded guilty. But if Rich's suspicion is correct then she is not publicly declaring her innocence in order to placate the Russians and speed up her release. At least this would explain away her doing something so stupid if in fact she didn't do it.

Sounds logical. Whatever happened - I hope Brittney Griner is soon home in the US. That's the most important thing. Then - maybe we'll know more, maybe we won't. I'm OK with either. There are a few highly-placed RUSSIANS who I think should be in Russian prisons - and aren't. Let's make a little room for them.
Bring Brittney home! Верните Бритни домой!

Bill, as anyone familiar with post-Soviet "law enforcement" knows, drugs and drug paraphernalia are notoriously easy to plant.
Given that Griner had some degree of protection due to her employer's status (team owner, a mid-level oligarch) and would not be normally arrested on such a charge even if she was guilty - her arrest was political hostage taking. So my best guess is she's innocent, and it almost doesn't matter if in unlikely event she isn't.

Anyone familiar with US law enforcement would know that as well.

But at least it's refreshing to see Biden and Harris find someone they don't want incarcerated over cannabis charges.

"Equality" is a very tricky legal concept. At its worst and least economically efficient, there's Marx' "From each according to his ability and to each according to his need". As has been regularly pointed out, this dictum penalizes effort and ability and rewards neediness. Not really a good long term approach to general prosperity.

In general, discrimination is perfectly legal. In specific instances, it isn't.

So what is "equality"? It depends I suppose on the context. Legally, it means "equality before the law" meaning that every citizen's rights and obligations will be deemed the same regardless of differences in...in what? There's where the dog lies buried.

Race? Pretty clear. Religion? Less clear perhaps, the government supposedly taking a neutral position but the tax code treats ministers differently in several significant ways. Sex? We discriminate really quite a lot there. Language spoken? Major discrimination. Wealth...strange to say, less than you might think.

It also matters who is doing the discriminating. The government or a private party?

The U.S. really is a classless society in many ways but we have a long history of discrimination on other bases.

Whenever anyone starts talking about "equality" I find I have many more questions than I have answers.
