    Great post, Gus.

The "Properties" of the Northcentral U. catalog show the author as "SCUPS" and document title "SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA UNIVERSITY",.

Well Gus, I think it means that Dr. Michael Ewald was wise not to post here.

Thanks, Gus. Knew you'd nail it.

I requested information from Empresarial about their DBA program. Ewald sent me three quick e-mails containing information about the school and program. (The usual stuff everyone knows.) I wrote back, asking him about the issues we've been disussing here. I even suggested he come onto the board and address them.

    Never heard another thing.

Two accredited schools employ him as a faculty member, listing his Ph.D. from Empresarial. They obviously did not check.

Hey, Ten Speed Press, here's my nomination to hire Gus Sainz to do the 16th edition of Bears' Guide. Of course it will be 42,618 pages long, but boy, will it be one heck of a useful book.

(Thank you, Gus. Great post, indeed.)

Thank you for the kind words, Dr. Bear. However, are you sure I would be limited to only 42,618 pages? If so, in spite of the wealth of information that the following chapters in the current (15th) edition of Bears’ Guide to Earning Degrees by Distance Learning contain, they might have to be dropped. ;)
    • Chapter 18 - Accredited Schools with Degrees Entirely by Distance Learning
    • Chapter 19 - Accredited Schools with Short Residency Programs
    • Chapter 20 - Accredited Schools with Nontraditional Residential Programs and Why We No Longer List Them
    • Chapter 21 - Other Schools with Nonresidential Programs
    • Chapter 22 - Other Schools with Short Residency Programs
    • Chapter 23 - Other Schools with Nontraditional Residential Programs
    • Chapter 24 - High School Diplomas
    • Chapter 25 - Law Schools
    • Chapter 26 - Medical And Naturopathic Schools
    • Chapter 27 - Degree Mills
    :D :D :D

Oh, well. The only chapter that might not be missed is the last one, as I understand that the definitive book on Degree Mills will be published soon. ;)

I rediscovered this thread after exploring American Military University. There is one fellow included in both the undergraduate and graduate faculty lists with a PhD from Empresarial. Plus another faculty member with final degree from Pacific Western University. Plus several with doctorates from Lasalle -- ostensibly in Philadelphia, but the misspelling is suspicious. And I didn't know that the Philadelphia La Salle has offered doctorates in Criminal Justice Administration.

    Not very comforting.

Found this on the site. For what is Lic. an abbreviation? Naturally I would assume licensed or licentiate but I don't believe a Rector would only be a licentiate, so..........

Where do you see anything about tuition? I couldn't find it.

Whatever happened to Quinn Tyler Jackson? At one time, it was rumored that he was teaching at AMU, but I don’t believe he (or his degree mill doctorate) were ever listed on AMU’s faculty list. However, his good friend and soul mate, John D. Moore (who was once, IIRC was pursuing a doctorate at UNISA, but now claims to be doing so at Northcentral University) is listed as a full-time faculty member.

It is interesting to note that two individuals on AMU’s undergraduate faculty listing, list themselves with “Dr.” as a prefix. One is Dr. Larry Flegle, another interesting character in the annals of distance learning. Dr. Flegle’s bio states he has a DBA from Nova Southeastern University, but the faculty list on shows his MA from Pepperdine. The other individual (and this is very troubling) is Dr. Jeffrey T Fowler, who is listed as having earned a PhD from the extremely elusive Cal Southern University. One can only hope that his degree was from the fictional Cal Southern University that was the setting for PUSH, a short-lived ABC television show, and not the blatant degree mill.

No this is not very comforting. It is disappointing. I hate to see my school so openly invite questions of credibility. I have complained to AMU/APUS.

I had never heard of Push. But here is an overview: http://www.allyourtv.com/shows/p/showguidepush.html

Sadly, I believe that the Cal Southern in question is the mill (based in Texas or the Caribbean, but definitely not California).

Larry is author of at least one of the degreeinfo articles: http://www.degreeinfo.com/articles.html

He has also been involved at Bellevue, Andrew Jackson, Jones International, Concordia International, Lansbridge, Troy State, Indiana Wesleyan University, Corinthian Colleges ... Indeed, this page describes him as a "Professor and Consultant for 21 Colleges & Universities."

These troubling faculty credentials are just the sort of thing DETC is supposed to pay attention to.

Which is more troubling: that they did note these things and found them unimportant, or that they didn't note them?

I don't think that Larry completed his dissertation.

By far the worst, and still listed as recently as June, 2002 (but no longer) was - "Philippe A. Michaud MBA : Trinity Coll. & U - Sioux Falls".

For those who don't get this very funny reference, Larry signed a faculty contract with Canyon College a few years back (a.e.d. days), before he knew it was very less-than-wonderful. When he tried to get out of the contract, Canyon threatened to sue. Steve Levicoff came to Larry's aid, put the Canyon administration in their place, and got Larry out of the contract.

The rather entertaining results can be read here.

I was wondering just the other day how to find this--possibly Levicoff's finest hour and as nobly funny as ever.
