These days, I have read several accounts of good schools resorting to blockchain technology for forgery protection. And I hear of other upcoming technologies that might prove equally useful. Obviously, crooks, including mill operators, read these reports, too.

Can't wait till the first MILL advertises "blockchained" degrees! "Just like the big guys - 'cause we're every bit as good!" NO THEY AREN'T! In those cases, the blockchain might supplant the time-worn Apostille. Despite all the hype, that document, long-abused by foreign degree mills, merely certifies that the fake degree was issued by the bogus school named thereon - and is not a forgery. It will give me no pleasure to see a bad school use blockchain tech. to serve exactly the same purpose for bad "degrees."
Invent a new type of fraud protection and the crooks will find some way to defeat, neutralize or profit from it.

I think you're exactly right. And they won't even really be using a blockchain, since it's not necessary to accomplish this sort of verification, whether for good or ill.

There are definitely applications that benefit from using a blockchain. But as many times as I've seen it proposed from various mostly well-meaning directions, I'm still not convinced transcript verification is one of them.
