Yes. DeAngelis, if I recall correctly, has been married four times. Interestingly, her official website makes no mention whatsoever about her current marriage. Perhaps she now has four divorces under her belt. Some relationship guru...

Ms. Laura's doctorate is RA. But unfortunately it's in physiology and has nothing remotely to do with psychology, counseling or relationships.

An MFT license isn't the same thing as a clinical psychologist license.

My drug and senility ravaged memory seems to recall mention of an MFT license in the bio-blurb on one of Gray's old book covers from years ago.

I'm not sure what's necessary renew an MFT license. But whatever, if Gray isn't actively practicing, then I'm not sure why his failure to renew the license is important. He seems to have a pretty good career going as an author.

I don't watch tabloid television, so I'm not acquainted with "Inside Edition".

But I think that Gray probably handled himself better when surprised by television cameras aggressively shoved in his face than the proprietors of junk television did by harassing him (again) merely for sport.

I ran a search on Dissertation Abstracts and the title of Dr. Schlessinger's dissertation, "EFFECTS OF INSULIN ON 3-O-METHYLGLUCOSE TRANSPORT IN ISOLATED RAT ADIPOCYTES", does not seem to have much to do with counseling and relationships. However, regardless of what one thinks of (or despises) her style and point of view, her marriage and family therapist license and years of teaching in the psychology department at Pepperdine University, certainly would make her at least as qualified to offer relationship advice as holders of non-accredited (Gray, DeAngelis) or honorary (Ann Landers, Abigail Van Buren) doctorates.

    Just my 1 1/2 cents...

Sounds interesting. Is that available in paperback?

The obscure scientific journals that publish studies like this are most likely printed in paperback :)

I'm from National City, and I know Sid's very well. I don't understand why you cite it here?

Those lonely adipocytes could probably benefit by forming some relationships.

I don't have any problem with her doing what she does, just as I don't have any problem with Gray doing what he does. Or, as you say, advice columnists. It's a free country.

To some extent, this is an example of the creeping credentialism that Alan Contreras has been complaining about. I mean, when did it suddenly become necessary to have a doctorate before you can write books or be a media celebrity?

I guess that there is an "ask the doctor" white-coats aspect to it. That's why I pointedly called Schlessinger 'Ms. Laura'. She would certainly qualify as 'Dr. Schlessinger' at a convention of biologists. But the 'Dr. Laura' thing is just her stage-name and there's no reason why anyone should take it seriously. While it's obviously a misrepresentation, I think that it's basically harmless.

My opinion of Gray is similar. The guy is an author. He writes books. If people like what they read, if they think it makes sense and they want to follow it, then cool. There are countless self-help, relationships and pop-psychology titles out there. Lots of people love reading that stuff. So what?

I say let Laura and Gray do their pop-psychology thing and leave them alone. But it would be foolish to believe that either of them are formal academic scholars either, or "white-coats" health-care professionals (doctors!), and to give their pronouncements more authority than they deserve.

People always have to think critically and exercise a little judgment.

    Hi Rich,

Merely a play on all the philosophical extras that many add to posts. Not meant to offend! I'm in San Diego but used to live in Chula Vista for a short time.

How many divorces does John Gray have under his belt?

Got that right! For whatever reason I've always been amused by that name.
    Have a good one!
