In a previous thread, Rich mentioned here and here that a conglomeration of polytechnics in New Zealand called Te Pūkenga now offers a Doctor of Professional Practice program that is geared toward practitioners.

The bad news is the government changed in New Zealand last year and the new government has split Te Pūkenga back up into its constituent institutions.

The good news is that Otago Polytechnic has apparently inherited this program:

Bearing in mind that a NZ dollar is about fifty US cents, that's a really good deal... assuming that international students aren't charged more, which I don't know.

I didn't realize they'd broken it back up.

The program is highly flexible. They'll admit students from the U.S. You can do it without traveling to New Zealand. (But why wouldn't you?) The degree is awarded for completing (and reporting on) a practical project vice a scholarly thesis. (But the academic rigor is there.) They're very responsive and are flexible; if they can supervise your project you can pursue it.

IIRC, before the formation of Te Pūkenga, Otago had the program, so there's really been no interruption in running the program.

    I like it.

"Totally by DL and will cost about $US5K per year for 3 or 4 years. This is a Level 10 (doctoral) qualification listed by the NZQA. "

NZ $9,456 / 1 year only for local student. For international student is NZ $32,500

$57,389.06 USD for the entire program is quite expensive for a Professional Doctorate via distance. The learning support is limited, the networking is limited, and local campus resource access is limited.

That's a shame if so. Where did you see that?

    Thank you.

Well that would be a total of US$57,586, which I expect that would be a deal breaker for a lot of people. I realize it's not NZ's obligation to provide opportunities for foreigners, but it's still a shame.

If that is the case, then we, the DI's members, must protest by performing the Haka at the Otago Polytechnic. :D

That's not at all how it read a year ago. I suspect the international fees are new since the return to the old structure.
