Our students are encouraged to attend their convocation, since they did the same amount of work and earned the same degrees as their face-to-face peers. We have two graduation ceremonies each year (fall and spring), each attended by a few thousand people (graduates, family and university faculty & staff). Students who are cannot attend their convocation can attend and walk through the next one (even though they already have their degree). We are no working on some special activities to honor our online students who travel to attend their graduation.

Perhaps something like this: Have the distance learning students all stand. Tell the ones who came less than a hundred miles to sit down. Repeat with increasing increments until there are only a few. Have them announce how far they came. Award a token prize to whomever came the furthest. Remind all the campus-based students this means they have fellow alumni everywhere.

I thought about going to my LU graduation, but I decided against it. It would be a 12 hour drive, and a plane trip is too expensive. Plus, hotels in the area are crazy high for graduation.

I do plan to attend my graduation for my current program (Master of Arts in Teaching), but I only live about 10 miles from the school.

If you wanted to go for one I would pick the Bachelors if it were me :)

TONY: Excellent idea, Steve. I'll discuss it with our Student Academic Services staff. Thanks much!

I hope you decided to attend! This goes out to anyone looking at this thread: Graduation ceremonies are a once in a lifetime opportunity! Not only are you walking down the stage to get that diploma, but you're celebrating all of your hard work. It's the last step before you head out into the "real world" and you really deserve to be recognized for it!

I want to go. I really do. Pretoria is so far away and if I went, I would have to take a week off from work ( it will be a vacation, you know.....LOL) Who knows. When the day gets here ( it will be in 2013), we shall see.

Good topic! I missed my undergrad ceremony, but I plan on attending UMUC's graduation ceremony. Unfortunately I need to wait until May 2012 since I won't graduate until this august. I live only about 45 minutes from where they hold commencement so it'll be easy to attend provided I don't move far away beforehand. I applaud those traveling a great distance to attend theirs!!
