Some of us who have more than a passing interest in South African higher education might be wondering, "How might Ramaphosa's presidency affect SA universities?" Any guesses? https://qz.com/1208494/cyril-ramaphosa-is-south-africas-president-after-jacob-zuma-resigns/
It might make them a bit more expensive for foreigners - but who knows? The Rand has strengthened in recent days and Cyril Ramaphosa has said "South Africa must come first in everything it does." Sounds a bit like Mr. Trump's "America First." If the ANC policies improve economic matters to any significant extent, the currency will likely be stronger. As far as other effects go, Mr. Ramaphosa says he and his Government will fight corruption and in doing so, end "undue influence on State institutions." If this includes universities -and his government is successful - I can see the benefits. I'll admit - much of this is optimistic conjecture. The ANC has been in power for a long time. I'm hoping Mr. Ramaphosa's leadership will bring about positive change. J.
I snorted involuntarily at this. Maybe the Democratic Alliance could improve things, but the ANC never will.

Yeah, I saw that. Now you know why I snorted at the idea that ANC policies would improve economic matters to any significant extent. I'm sympathetic to the history, but...
