I guess I thought the moratorium had been lifted since it's been two weeks since Katrina and the death toll is far, far from what was expected and most of the people are now being taken care of.

    Hate is a strong word...

Why, exactly, do you hate President Bush because of the 2000 election? What do you feel that he did wrong?

On a side note, did you happen to follow the 2004 Washington state gubernatorial election? If so, do you hate Christine Gregoire?

I did, and I still think it was the right thing to do while Mayor Nagin predicted the death toll to be over 10,000 people. Thankfully, those estimates appear to have been grossly overexaggerated.

So, if you want to discuss the politics surrounding Katrina, then have at it. Just please remember to abide by the TOS, with no personal attacks.

Glad we can talk about it now.
The first thing I want to say is what I learned as a coastal resident:
If you're in trouble after a 'cane, call the Coast Guard. They were in NO in about an hour.

Re: Was Katrina REALLY so significant?

"Society" is just a term of convenience. It is not an entity and has no sentience or volition. The Projects Plantations of New Orleans and other cities result directly from Liberal (not liberal) government. This is the Great Society, et al, in full form.

The Projects Plantations are the Indian Reservations with a few twists of their own.

"Society" has become a weasel word and strawman for ideologues of all stripes.

Let me go out on a limb and predict more race baiting in the Hurricane Ophelia aftermath.

Because, if the Fed response to the east coast is one minute quicker than it was in NO, the "blame Bush for everything" crowd is going to whine that he cares more about the hotels and resorts on the Carolina coast than...well, you get the picture.

    Outcome

    gkillion,

That seems to be a likely outcome but I don't believe Ophelia is strong enough to demand any significant relief.

Personally I am less interested in blame than solutions to the problems we're facing now. For example, Atlanta is swelling with evacuees. I've been helping out at the Red Cross supercenters and many of these people cannot face the thought of returning to nothing and are planning on making a new life here, which is quite understandable. Until they get back on their feet they will cause a huge drain on Georgia's social services. Also, who's got long-term solutions for Louisiana's land problems (losing massive amounts of land into the sea every day, no doubt worsened by the hurricane)? This is going to have a huge economic impact, eventually killing shrimp-fishing among other things... it's really a national economic issue. Who's going to turn FEMA into an efficient and truly functional organization?

I don't trust Bush's regime to think in the long-term. He's got a narrow little set of conservative issues and doesn't have the vision to see beyond that. Who knows, maybe he will step up to the plate, but at this moment I doubt it.

    Redneck Rescue

Look on the bright side. Maybe he can teach us how to construct a gas mask out of duct tape.

Nice try, but no, I don't think so.

Tom! My favorite Democrat (or is it Carl?). Well, you're one of my favorites!

You really don't think so? By anyone?

Jimmy: This is the type of person who would have been the first to condemn Bush had he immediately intervened accusing him of usurping state and municipal authority.

Tom: Nice try, but no, I don't think so.

Well, while not exactly what I was talking about, today New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin called Vice Admiral Thad Allen, head of the recovery effort in N.O., the "Federal Mayor of New Orleans."

So, I certainly do think my initial statement has some merits.
