According to the forum FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions), “Certain words may have been censored by the administrator. If your posts contain any censored words, they will be blanked-out like this: ****.

The same words are censored for all users, and censoring is done by a computer simply searching and replacing words. It is in no way 'intelligent'.”

As a public service I am providing all forum members with a list of the censored words that will be automatically blanked out. They are:

    ****
    ****
    ****
    ****
    ****
    ****
    ****
    ****
    ****
    ****
    ****
    ****
    ****
    and

    ****

Please refrain from using these words. Thank you for your cooperation. :D

    Thanks, Gus.

I make a personal commitment to never use any of the listed words. Civil dialogue/interaction should be the protocol for a kinder gentler DegreeInfo.

So perhaps the best course of action is to avoid three hot topics:

    Religion
    Politics
    Degree Mills! :D

    The eleven four-letter words

In the introduction to one of his books, Sinclair Lewis wrote that he had used "all eleven forbidden four-letter words" in his manuscript, and the editors had removed all but two.

    No, I can't either.

Why can't we use ****?

I see nothing wrong with this word.

    Hmmmm...:

    "The early village cock
Hath twice done salutation to the morn."

    -- Shakespeare, Henry III

"Wherefore hast thou smitten thine ass these three times?"
    -- Numbers 22:32

    "See Dick. See Dick run."
    -- William Gray

"The Owl and the Pussy-Cat went to sea
    In a beautiful pea-green boat."

    -- Edward Lear

Don't mind me; I actually love auto profanity filters, even if I was once kicked off of a trivia channel by a bot for answering "Keiji Nishitani." ;)

Jeez--this is one smart filter! (Either that, or somebody turned it off. :p)

Now where would a well-written Levicoff post be without words like ******* or ******* or ****-****?

In reality (but I'd prefer no one test it), we do not have the profanity filter turned on at present. (UBB, the predecessor software, also had a profanity filter, but we didn't use it there either.)

Long ago (1997-98?) when there was a Peterson's distance learning board, it had absolutely no protection against people posting under fake names, but it did prevent profanity. I remember wanting to use the word "Bull----" (fully spelled out) to respond to one of Snell's famous diatribes... but the profanity filter wouldn't allow me to do so. The simple way around it was to simply type b-u-l-l-s------, which of course the filter didn't recognize and happily permitted.

That's one of the reasons I wasn't a great supporter of using a profanity filter. It's very easy to get around. And common decency is so much better anyway :)

I'm surprised that Snell didn't put a spin on things by saying the board simply wouldn't accept any derogatory terms in reference to Monticello. :D
