    Alabama just made interstate marriages legal two or three years ago.

    NO, I am NOT kidding. And the vote just barely passed. (Just a wee-bit over 50%)

    You live with me, and I with you,
    And you will be my POSSLQ.
    I'll be your friend and so much more;
    That's what a POSSLQ is for.

    (For the uninitiated, POSSLQ is pronounced posselque...can you quess what it means and who immortalized it?)

  3. In Georgia as recently as 1995 (I stopped caring once I moved) adultery was a felony. Sodomy (which covered a very wide range of conduct between consenting adults, married or not) was also a felony. The statutory minimum penalty exceeded, by several years, the time you could get for a bestiality conviction. No, I'm not kidding.

    The first, last, and only time I ever heard of an arrest on this particular charge was 1994.. and I got some really funny looks at the jail when I handed over the booking sheet.

    "No, I don't generally hunt for sodomy arrests.. this one was a warrant."

    Oh, I believe you. Other gems still on the books in Massachusetts include:

    Adultery

    Fornication

    Sodomy

    Blasphemy

    Ah! A piece of trivia that for some reason I remember -- or think I do [IMG]

    Person of the Opposite Sex Sharing Living Quarters. If I'm not mistaken this was a census bureau term that came up in 1980 or so, and was a politically correct way of indicating an unmarried live-together couple. To my knowledge, the term did not apply to, say, roommates that had no romantic interest.

    That's right, the gubmint invented it, but:

    though hard to
    show,on
    theInternet (evenso);
    will you be my posslq?
    (don'tyouknowit)
    was written by a lower-case poet,who
    fractured the gramma
    but not the drama.

    It's the only lower-case poet I can think of at the moment, so here it goes:

    e.e. cummings?

    Yep. The Internet associative memory was not very good in this case. I found dozens of instances of "Will you be my posslq?" but I couldn't find a single one that attributed it back to e.e. cummings.
