    TLDR: In short...
CEO says: We are losing our rear ends!
    Co-Founder says: Figure It Out.

For some reason, Costco decided not to raise the cost of the drink/hotdog combo, it's still $1.50 (for now anyways). From the looks of things, they'll keep it at that rate too. Instead of raising pricing to this, they've built their own plant or two for churning out these hotdogs.

Every time we go shopping there, we get the drink/hotdog and either an extra fries or a salad. I mean, I wouldn't just go there for the food, but while we're already shopping, we would eat there as well. I think that's the main draw for people shopping, there is either a food court at the mall or whatever.

That's a good deal! When I was working in Washington, DC (2006 - 2010), my 'go-to' lunch was the half-smoke combo from my favorite stand at the end of the street. For $4.50, Mohamed would give you two Hebrew National half-smokes, a bag of chips, and a coke, chili included, if desired. I miss working downtown. I've never been a fan of Costco. I don't care for the East German-style entry and exit procedures.

    It reduces leakage.

They can ask for this search because of your contract with them. Opting out of membership is certainly one way to deal with it.

When Walmart does it, they're asking you to surrender your rights under the 4th Amendment. They can't search you without probable cause. But constitutional rights can be waived by contract, which is how Costco is able to do it.

I shop at both. I cheerfully hand over my receipt upon leaving Costco. I never do it at Walmart. Not ever. I just smile and greet them with a cheery "good bye" or "have a nice day" and proceed to the exit.

Most likely a loss leader. Works on my wife and I, anyway. Same with rotisserie chickens.

Hey, if it saves them money, then it's the right thing to do. It must be nice to be a large company where you can build new production facilities from the ground up to save a few cents per unit.

It also keeps you there longer, increasing the chance of making impulse purchases. Given all the sugar and salt and saturated fats, it probably also slows your brain to a crawl your and impairs your judgement.

'Scuse me. I'm confused here. Why all this talk about searches. The news item was about $1.50 hotdog combos. Not searches. Is this in the wrong thread - or am I? If I missed something, please tell me.

Oh, okay. I was responding to someone's comment. Um...$1.50 hot dogs? I'm for 'em.

Sorry Rich. Found the comment. Missed it before. Old age and dollar-store glasses, I guess.

WRONG! Costco can not ask me to comply with shit. I have no contract with them.

If you're a member, you do. If you're not a member, it is a moot point.

By the way, starting off a post with "WRONG!" is rude. Was that your intent? And is the vulgarity necessary to communicate your point?

Anyone who thinks Costco is worse than a border check has never crossed the border.

IIRC, you don't even need a membership card to enter Costco (else, how would you get a card in the first place?), and you can eat at the cafe place without a card. I think you can also buy alcohol without a card, but nothing else. Leaving takes, what, maybe an extra 2-3 minutes? Super fast!

The worst "border" I ever crossed was re-entering the US via LAX. That took me something like 3 hours, as an American, to clear customs. And I didn't even have anything "weird". I've heard it can be even worse at the Canadian/Mexican land borders.

In Europe, I think the longest I've ever had to wait was MAYBE 30 minutes. Probably less.

Give me Costco any time! ;)

you're an American Citizen? I assumed you retained the citizenship of the nation to which you returned. I'm glad you are an American.

Just because someone baits you doesn't mean you must always dutifully bite the hook.

    Anyway, that's enough of that.
