I agree....if anyone takes the time to take a look at the posting history of the "gang of six" - going all the way to alt.distance.ed - one tends to be struck by a recurring level of immaturity/childishness - and some plain bad behavior.

Who are the gang of six and what famous thing did they do that fixes their number at six?

Ted, I hope that was a rhetorical question - from you ;)

"The term actually originated with Les Snell...who runs Monticello University. The official "Gang of Six," such as it is, consists, alphabetically, of: John Bear, Dennis Huber, Steve Levicoff, Emir Mohammed, Tom Nixon, and Chip White."

I knew they were a group of senior members on various dl boards who had pissed off some degree mill operator, but I didn't know which exact six the dl experts they were or which degree mill operator they had pissed off. Now I know. Thanks.

    True.

No loss at all, except Dr. Bear - when his ego was in check. They all carried far too much baggage.

I guess if contributing to the DL world is baggage, you are right. I will say if that's baggage I want to carry convoys full.

    Tim,

Baggage referred to the distractions that took away from the useful DL related input. Too many discussions became a battle of egos, criticisms or meandered into peripherally-related issues. When the real stuff took place is was great, there just wasn't enough of it. I feel the board retains enough expertise to be valuable without all the side shows, that's all.

So, the baggage I referred to was everything BUT the 'contributing to the world of DL'.

P.S. My comment about Dr. Bear was badly written. His anecdotes were always interesting and egos are acceptable when the achievements are great. I do miss his contributions.

Bruce and Bill Dayson were the other objective and wise voices I enjoyed hearing, fortunately they are still around occasionally.

    Cheers,

    Dave C.

As a follow-up - the thread generating the most activity BY FAR on degreediscussion.com addresses the "ethical DL question" of syllabi distribution.

To my mind (tenured faculty) this is akin to "how many angels on the head of a pin" - but it's being beaten to death over there.

Over here - people come for argueably more substantive advice/help and generally get it. This is something I hope continues.
